Splenda??

I need some info on Splenda. I know it's better than sugar for weight-loss, but what about health? I'm always iffy on fake sugars. I have some lactation cookies that I'd love to make, but I'm trying to lose weight. My MIL suggested I make them with Splenda. But I don't know about it health-wise. Any info would be great. Thanks!

Splenda is made from sugar ... so it's not synthetic (i.e. fake) like Equal and Sweet 'n' low. Here is the FAQ: http://www.splenda.com/page.jhtml?id...calorie.inc#q1

Re: Splenda??

I used to work as Food Scientist developing Fruit2O which uses sucralose. So here is what I know. Sucralose is safe although it is fairly new to this country it has been used in Europe for decades. It is safe for children, pregnant and lactating women. It is not natural. What it is is sugar that uses chlorine to change the structure so that your body doesn't recognize it as sugar. It is also 250 times sweeter than sugar. The reason you can use the same amount as sugar when baking is that it is combined with a carrier such as maltose dextrin (spelling?).

I hope this helps.

Re: Splenda??

Splenda is not natural nor is it healthy.

I would urge you to stop using it. We used Splenda for years in our house until I did some research on it. Now we use Stevia. It's a 100% natural sweet herb that is not chemically altered in any way and contains zero calories.

See, I was thinking something like this, but I wasn't sure. How does stevia work? Can you just use it in place of sugar in equal amounts like Splenda?

Well, I'm not sure about cooking/baking w/it because I've never done that. I use organic sugar to cook with. We use the powdered and the liquid stevia to mix in drinks and stuff.

There's lots of info online about how to cook with it. You'd just have to Google it.

Splenda I thought was sugar- they say its sugar....

Its the only sweeter that I think tastes like sugar BUT I have to use 2X the amt than I would of sugar in my coffee to get the same flavor--- the only place I have ever used it is a church on sunday for coffee time...

They say it's MADE from sugar. It's not sugar. And they add chlorine to it to keep your body from absorbing it, which is why it's calorie free.
