Unhappy Help! PUL cracking and leaking!!!

I am so frustrated right now!!! The PUL in my pocket diapers is cracking and leaks now! I have no idea why and how to keep it from happening in the future! With my entire stash on the brink of being ruined, I don't know what to do!!! My diapers are 5 month old or less!!! I have BG 3.0s, Knickernappies, Happy Heinys, and SwaddleBees, all 5 months old or less. The SwaddleBees are in the best condition, followed by the Happy Heinys, but even those has some cracking.

Here's the details of my washing care:
I wash every day to every other day, so diapers are not sitting around dirty for long periods of time.
Wash once on cold, then twice on hot (about 120 degrees).
I usually only use soap on the first cycle, but I use about 1/2 the required amount, so it takes more than one cycle to rinse out.
I used to use Planet detergent, but I have switch to Tide.
I occasionally use a small amount of bleach.
I always dry on medium or low.

Does anyone have any ideas what could be causing the cracking? I thought maybe the bleach, so I have stopped bleaching the covers. But it says on the website that you can use a small amount of bleach on BGs and they are the worst ones(also the ones I've had the longest). Could it be the Tide? Has anyone else had this happen?!? I don't know what to do and I can't replace my entire stash ever 5 months! Please, please let me know if you have any ideas!

I seem to remember one of the diaper companies saying they got a bad batch of PUL. Perhaps contact the manufacturers? In any case, I'll give you a bump. Hopefully someone else has some answers for you.

Have you tried drying on HOT? PUL, by nature, needs to be heated to help seal the fibers in what makes it up. Are they visible cracks? It sounds like you're doing everything correctly, except that it's recommended to dry on HOT once in a while to seal the PUL.

Re: Help! PUL cracking and leaking!!!

No I haven't dried on hot because I thought I had read not to, maybe on the BG site? But there are visible cracks and some places, the water proof layer is gone or full of holes! It's awful! I'm going to replace them, but I am so scared it will happen again. So I am trying to figure out what is causing it so hopefully I can stop my new diapers from cracking.

Re: Help! PUL cracking and leaking!!!

Our wash cycle is very similar to yours. We've only ever used powdered Tide and we have a FL. We've been using our pocket diapers for 11 months and even got a bunch of them used and have not had any PUL issues. The only thing I think I haven't done that you have is use bleach on the covers.

I'm so sorry this has happened to you.

Re: Help! PUL cracking and leaking!!!

It's likely the bleach. I used to wash my diapers about once every two weeks with 1/4 cup of bleach or less. The cracking happened to my entire stash, too. At first, I didn't realize it was the bleach. Then I replaced all of my diapers and when it happened again, I knew that was the cause. Now I use Bac-Out to control odors.

Re: Help! PUL cracking and leaking!!!

I was also going to suggest it may be the bleach

I don't use bleach either. It may be okay for MF inserts, but it eats PUL.

Re: Help! PUL cracking and leaking!!!

Worse...bleach DISSOLVES pul. It will continue to crack until it disappears entirely. Some of my dipes were like they'd never had the laminate layer applied...it was just fabric. As a retailer and manufacturer, I thought I knew what I was doing. Once I realized the issue, I now recommend no bleach ever. BumGenius does allow 1/4 cup of bleach once a month, but I don't know of any other manufacturer that allows it.
