Exclamation <SPAN>bad constipation HELP! *update #19!*

ok, my son, Linc is now 11 mos old. he was EBF up until Nov when i had to start supplementing (dh was deployed, i lost so much weight etc). anyways, he started to get constipated soooo bad in dec. actually it started the day that dh came home from Iraq. anyways, it was so bad that his butt would be bleeding, he'd be screaming bloody murder and upon opening his diaper, his butt was the size of a half dollar. i could see the poop but it was a HUGE ball and would not come out. he cried, i cried, it was bad. well, i took him to the dr and they said ok, he's constipated put him on mirilax. it didn't do ANYTHING. nothing. he ended up being stopped up for a few weeks. i have tried everything. i make fresh prune baby food for him that he eats with his oatmeal and in his bottles. he has acidopholus, mirilax, benefiber in his bottles. switched him to soy formula, no change. brought him back to the dr. and they did an xray. he was full of poop. his bowels completely full. they did a blood test, he's normal. they don't know what's wrong with him. he's STILL having issues. when he DOES go, he screams, bleeds and i have to squeeze his butt together to help squeeze it out. i have tried pear juice, pears, everything i can think of. he's not having dairy, bananas, apples or anything else that is known to constipate. on tuesday we go to see a specialist, but i was just wondering if anyone has any other ideas for me to try? he's in so much pain all the time. it breaks my heart. and i'm so frustrated. also, i don't know if anyone knows anythignn about semonila, but he had it at 6 days old and was hospitalized, i don't knowif that could have anything to do with his problems??? i'm just trying to think of anything. thank you, if you read all this!!!

Try cutting out the oatmeal too. Oatmeal constipates both of my girls. I'm sorry you and your lo are going through this. My oldest had bad constipation and it is just horrible. It got so bad at one point that I had to vaseline her bottom up and use a q-tip to help her out because it would get stuck. I found the best way to get it under control was to make her go everyday. The longer in between bowel movements the worse the constipation is going to be. I would either use a baby glycerin suppository or a q-tip to make her go. My oldest was also ff so we switched her to nutramigen and that did wonders. It is expensive and taste like crap but my dd was never constipated again. We had her on that for a couple months until she was going to the bathroom regularly with no problems. I then slowly switch her to soy formula and she did fine. I hope you can figure out something that works!

Amke sure he doesn't get anything with rice, that clogged DD up quick. Have you tried apple juice? That and a little prunes works well for DD. Also, plain yogurt or yo-baby with flavor. We started that and never had any more trouble or need for the juice or prunes. I think the cultures really helped

I would put a little bit of dark karo syrup in DD's bottle when she would get constipated. It usually would take a day of having it in each bottle, but it almost always worked. Goodluck Momma, I really hope you find something. It is so heartbreaking.

Also, make sure that when you make his bottles that you use the full amount of water -- as in put in 8 oz of water and then add the formula powder. I've seen a lot of mommas that don't, and the amount of water is extremely important.

Traditional Medicinals has a tea for children called smooth move (have fennel and licorice, i remember), and while I can give my 25 lb almost 2 yr old a little bit watered down, I don't know about a baby that young. You could try calling them and see what they say, though.

I would cut back on the fiber and see if you can get him to drink an extra couple of ounces of water a day. Fiber will plug you up really fast if you don't have enough water to go with it.

Try glycerin suppositories. It will help move the poop out, without you helping him. We are in the same situation as you with my 4 and a half year old. I can only sympathize. It is so heartbreaking to see them in pain like that.

You say he's on formula - check the amount of iron in it, and see if you can find something that's lower in iron. High iron content tends to bind babies up.

Stay away from rice, oatmeal, bananas, cheese. Try prunes, pears, apples, make sure he gets lots of water, maybe even dilute his formula a bit. Some dark Karo corn syrup in the bottles may help, as will some yogurt - activia is good, but even baby yogurts are great. And definitly pick up some glycerine suppositories - those help DD over the hump when she gets bound up.

i did do the suppositories but the problem is, the poop is RIGHT there so the suppository falls right out. he does drink water and i dilute his bottles but i'll try getting him to drink more. maybe the fiber vs water is off. thank you so much for your support!!!

You get so much conflicting information on this. Oatmeal usually helps, but I have heard it can make it worse, whereas Im pretty sure apples are always binding. I would say probiotics, make sure he is getting enough liquid, and FLAX. I put it in EVERYTHING, and it helps IMMENSELY, for both myself and DD. Literally, I sprinkle flax seed meal (I buy the whole seeds and grind them in a coffe grinder) into everything, yogurt, oatmeal, spaghetti, etc. It helps. A ton. It breaks your heart to see your LO like that, Lorien has had some issues, but never quite as bad as your LO. I hope it get figured out!
