Most kids will go through a stuttering stage where their thoughts are faster then their mouths are. Most will outgrow it, others will need help through speech therapy.

As far as getting him evaluated, go with your instinct. He is your son and you know him best. Don't allow others to talk you out of it if you really feel it's needed. Besides, there's no harm in an evaluation. It'll either confirm or calm your worries. If he qualifies for speech therapy, then he'll get extra help. If he doesn't, then you can stop worrying about it.

My son who is almost four went through a stuttering stage for quite awhile. It's stopped now that he can express himself better. I didn't feel it was necessary for him to be evaluated, but I know that in other cases it may be warranted.
