How old for a "big girl/boy" bed?

DD is just 15 months, so she's still in a crib. But, we recently got a BFP and are wondering at what age we'll be able to transition DD to a big girl bed and reserve her crib for the new one.

We're wanting her to be old enough to know to come to us in the middle of the night if she wakes up and needs something, rather than wander around the house.

I've been wondering about this, too. I moved my DD when she was 18 mo. but she was a GREAT sleeper and very independent. We still fight to get DS (16 month old) to sleep at night, and he still occasionally wakes up in the night. I just can't imagine him out of his crib right now. We're TTC#3 and hoping DS will be out of the crib by his second birthday.

Re: How old for a "big girl/boy" bed?

I think it's really hard to say as each child is so different. My older two girls were in "big girl beds" right around 2 years old, but my third is almost 22 months and there's no way she's ready. She's too into everything and I couldn't trust that she'd be safe if she got out of bed. The older two would come right to me if they woke up, but not Kristin...she'd wander and get herself into trouble, so it's still going to be awhile with her. Sorry that that doesn't help at all, but it really depends on the child

I moved my daughter at about 24 months and she wasn't ready. It was a rough ride to say the least.

DS is 19 months and he's definitely not ready. I hope he stays in that crib for a long time.

I was 4 when my mom took me out of my crib. I would climb in but I was too scared to climb out lol.

My dd was almost 2 and climbong out of the crib so much we gave up but she would wander around the house. We ended up getting her a bed and buying double doors so you could lock the bottom half and leave the top open to hear her.

DS was about 2. He began crawling out of the crib so we got a toddler bed. He sleeps in the nursery which is part of our suite. He crawls into bed with us early in the AM, but falls asleep and stays most of the night in his bed.

Re: How old for a "big girl/boy" bed?

DD#1 turned 2 in December and has been in a big girl bed for about a month. She is good a good sleeper and doesn't leave her room when she wakes up so I don't have to worry about her wandering the house. She does like to get up on the changing table and play with the wipes warmer though. DD#2 was born in November and we kept her in a mini pack'n'play in our room until DD#1 was moved into a big girl bed and the crib was available.

Re: How old for a "big girl/boy" bed?

We just moved DS into a big boy bed at 20 months. We have to put a gate in the doorway though-otherwise he would definitely wander around (he still wanders in his room a bit). I think I would rather have waited longer and kept him in a crib, but we need the crib for our upcoming baby. He doesn't wander in the middle of the night though. So if your child doesn't seem ready when you need to make the switch, a gate in the doorway is always an option.

Re: How old for a "big girl/boy" bed?

We just moved dd to a toddler bed about 2 weeks ago, and she's done great! She's 21 months. She cried the first night we put her in it, but not for very long, and she hasn't since. She's gotten out of the bed a couple times, but that's been during naps, not at night, and after she had been in bed for more than an hour. We set up the crib in the new baby's room, and I figured if she really resisted, she could sleep in the crib in there since he'll probably be in our room for a few months. We still have the video monitor in there, so I can see when she gets out of bed, and we close her door at night because she's kind of a light sleeper, so we put one of those door knob things on it so she can't open it. I really thought she would get down and play through her naps, but even if she's not sleeping, she stays in her bed for the most part. A friend told me about a family she knows that moved their son to a toddler bed, and they put up a rail (like you would on a twin bed to keep them from falling off) and the other side against the wall, and the child didn't know he could get down!

Re: How old for a "big girl/boy" bed?

I moved DS at 17 months b/c he was climbing out of his crib. DD is already trying to get out of her crib, so I have a feeling she'll be making the switch early as well.
