Re: Curious about this name...

Boy. It is traditionally a boy name, and since our children have Celtic/Gaelic names, I'm more familiar with the traditional.

That said, it has been used - like so many names - for a girl, and many would think girl.

It's beautiful either way, but I think boy because it WAS a boy name!

My cousin's son told me, after meeting my newest baby, Lachlan, that everyone was going to tease him for having a girl's name. I didn't even bother explaining about tradition.

Funny, though, I was with a couple of little girls today, sisters named Ryan and Drew. So it seems that most boys' names are up for grabs nowadays if it sounds "cute" for a girl!

Re: Curious about this name...

Wow, I read the first page and most people say boy or gn......I feel like it is a girl's name but could be used for boy. If that makes sense. Like I think Ryan (Rye-un) is a boy's name but I know a girl named Ryan. Everyone thinks she is a boy before they meet her. If I was going to meet a Rowan, I would assume girl.

I would think it could be boy or girl. I've seen it used for both.

Girl. But that is because there is a movie with Nicholas Cage in it (cant remember the title) and there is a little girl named Rowan.

I went to high school with sisters named Evan and Kyle. Their parents were way ahead of the curve with naming trends!

When I hear the name Rowan I think "girl" but that's because I have a friend whose last name is Rowan. I do think that now it's totally a GN name.

I think of girl when I hear rowan because I have a girl I know and thats her dd's name. I can see how it can be used for either gender.
