How much to pay a 10 year old mother's helper...POLL

I am thinking of paying our neighbor girl who is 10 years old to come play with Nikolas and Kate for an hour a few days a week so that I can get some more sewing done.

So my question is: How much is fair per hour? I will always be right here supervising.

Fine print so that there are no worries: She will not be out of sight with the babies or be responsible for anything (feeding, changing diapers...). Thanks for any concern though.

I did this when I was her age and for several years after I made a whopping $1.00 and hour now, so I think a few more dollars an hour would be reasonable. OR is there something that she really wants that she would be saving for? I worked as a mothers helper a few hours a week all summer long and at the end of the summer the family gave me the bicycle I was wanting!! It was nice to be able to know that was my goal and I know now that the bicycle was worth much more than what I was earning. I did the same thing with my oldest sister one year-I was about 16 and I watched my nieces and stayed with her all summer. When school started she took me to get contacts. She paid for the exam and the lenses.

That's a great idea! I am going to talk to her mom sometime next week and I will see if this is something that may work. Thanks mama for the tip.

I have the 9 year old neighbour come over for the same reason and the kids love it. Depending on the day she`ll stay anywhere from 1-3 hours and I pay her $3-4 per hour.

The less hours she's there, the more I would pay her - does that make sense? If she were only there two hours a day, twice a week, then I'd pay her 10 a day (5/hr)
if she were there 3hrs a day, I might say 12 - 4/hr.

having a set day rate is kinda better (IME) than an hourly rate

and also - very cool of you to give this little girl her first "job" and maybe teach her early on about responsibility and how money works - so many kids miss that lesson.

I did this twice before...had a teen cousin of mine, and then my friend's oldest dd. Each time I paid them $5/hr. I think I only had one the first time when I would hire my cousin, and the second time was for 2 girls. They would just play with the girls so I could clean.

I am about to have a 12 y/o do the same thing for me when the baby is born to entertain my 21 mos dd. I am going to pay her $5 and hour. I figured I can pay her more as she gets older.

LOL I have a daycare through the navy & I only get $3/hr (Navy makes our rates) & your child's helper according to all votes should get more than I do.
