3 year old with unknown allergies. help!

this is going too be long but i need help. my son has hives head too toe. i have been too the er/doc 4 times in the last 3 weeks. the first time ds had woken up and had a yogurt and some banana and about 2 hours latter he started getting little red bumps. about an hour into the breakout he said his neck was itchy and he started breathing funny. so we rushed too the e.r. they gave him benadril (sp?) they gave him one dose in the e.r. and he had one at home and all the symptoms were gone. we went back too our regular routine and didn't think anything else about it.

fast forward too three days ago. he had yogurt and pb&j before bed and slept fine all night, when he woke he got sick all over, then had diarrhea and about an hour later started getting spots. he didn't eat anything until about lunch time, he had a half pb&j. we took him too the doc at about 2 pm and the spots were now welts. very dark red around the outside and light pink/red inside. i was thinking they were hives but they are huge. stretching across the stomach and legs. he is miserable. the doc said the same thing the e.r. said. nothing! just keep giving benadril. it keeps going in cycles, he gets a little better about an hour after taking the meds and then starts getting worse again when it's almost time for another dose. the only thing that is new in our home is our jelly, we switched brands but still the same kind. he has no known allergies and has had all the foods that are on the list of known allergy causers. (eggs peanuts, milk and wheat)

there is nothing changed in our home, we changed our laundry soap about a month ago but it is a free and clear and i'm sure he would have had an outbreak before he did and between the times he did if that was it. we have not used any chemicals on anything, no lawn treatments, cleaners or anything. i really am feeling hopeless. my poor guy can not live on benidril his entire life and it is obviously something in our home. i really do not even know what i am looking for here just mabey hoping someone has a plan of attack or anyone been through this. i would also like some tips on foods i can make for him with out eggs, peanuts or milk. i think i am going too cut those out until this is all figured out. he has not had any milk products all day today or yesterday evening but i can not keep him off the peanut butter jar and he has not had almonds or i would just get almond butter. he has never had any sea food besides fish but he was not around any during the outbreaks either.

we have an appointment with his pedi tomorrow but i am really annoyed at the responses i have gotten so far. the dates are off on my camera, these were last night.

Re: 3 year old with unknown allergies. help!

Get a referral to an allergist, preferably a pediatric allergist, but one that sees lots of kids is fine too. Bring the pictures and explain what happened. Honestly, pediatricians know very little about allergies. DD has severe food allergies and between what I've learned from the allergist and what I've read from reputable allergy info sources, I've been surprised how little regular doctors know. An allergist is best equipped to do proper testing and interpretation of the test results. Sometimes peds order allergy testing, but don't know much about what the results really mean! I hope your LO feels better!

wow I have no clue really. I hope you get it figured out. And I'd go to a specialist if you can. It could probably be the best. GL mama keep us updated.

Wow! I agree with getting him into an allergist as soon as possible.

Re: 3 year old with unknown allergies. help!

mama! I just wanted to let you know that most of the time hives are not caused by allergens. Stress, hormones, auto-immune issues are more common or sometimes doctors have no idea what causes them.

I developed chronic hives about a year and a half ago. I thought it was food related. I went to the urgent care, they just gave me zyrtec and a cortisteroid. They told me if they came back once finished the medicine then to go to an allergist. The hives came back, of course.

The allergist ran a full food panel since I thought it might be related to food. Absolutely nothing showed a response. The allergist ran some other tests and it turned out that my body had high levels of thyroid antibodies. I already knew I had low thyroid, but didn't know it was auto-immune related. My body was attacking my thyroid. Anyway, because of that result, the allergist told me that was what was going on with the hives as well. My body was attacking the cells in my body that contain histamine and breaking the cells open releasing the histamine which causes hives.

I had to be on an anti-histamine for about six months continuously twice a day before I was able to stop. I was told they may come back at any time or they may never come back.

Anyway, now that I shared my long story, I hope you are able to see that your son may not have any allergies at all. Hives are funny that way. I hope you are able to find out what's going on. Definitely go see an allergist. He'll have to be off of anti-histamines for awhile before being tested, the allergist's office should be able to tell you exactly how long.

both times he had yogurt, was is the same type of yogurt? He may be allergic to one of the ingrediants in the yogurt & it has taken multiple exposures to react.

i do not know why we did not even think about that! he had never had that yogurt before this and it was the same yogurt both times he reacted. we had a long appointment with his pedi and he gave us a referral too an allergist. he also gave us a couple of the epipen jr. that was mainly because of how swollen ds' face was and the pedi said that was not a good sign. he admitted he didn't know much about allergies and even called in a corpsman for help. dh the corpsman got a laugh out of that. ds is looking alot better now, only a few spots that are just a light pink shade and he is not complaining about itching. well i'm off too look at yogurt labels now.

thanks for all the responses

Once my son is exposed to dairy he gets horrible hives and they last days -- up to a week. As soon as the Benadryl starts to wear off they pop up again and he gets itchy. So I don't think it's that your son is being re-exposed -- it sounds like he was exposed twice and the hives kept coming back because the Benadryl was wearing off.

I'm glad the ped gave you an epi pen.
