Oh, I wanted to add that I always graft the gusset together before starting the legs. If I don't, I end up with gaping holes that I can't close up without it looking like crap.

You mean to pick them up on the sides? You have to just insert them into a point...let me see if I can get a video or something to help you out.

Thanks. I understand how to pick up the stitches, still not sure where. I just don't see any space for it in here w/o doubling back along the leg or gusset opening lines, and that can't make sense.

Um. I'm not sure what you mean. You pick them up along the end of the gusset. Let me snap a pic and do it with some scrap yarn cause I'm not ready to start the other leg yet.

thanks for your patience with me. maybe I need to get a pattern that closes the gusset first, do that, and it'll be clearer?

You can close up the gusset first no matter what pattern you use. Just skip over the directions to pick up the sts, and graft it first, then pick it up.
