Re: Chicken Pox Vaccine

I am dealing with the same dilemma. DD is up to date on everything except CP, because I would rather her catch it and have more assurance that she'll have the immunity for the long-term than have the vax wear off, not get boosters in adulthood and then become very sick. Our state doesn't have a philosophical exemption, so she either needs to catch it before September or have the vax.

I plan on vaxing #2 on an alternative/delayed schedule, but I will have an extra 3-4 months with her since she'll turn 3 before the year actually starts. DD1 doesn't turn 3 until 6 weeks into the school year.

Re: Chicken Pox Vaccine

we don't have the same worry here, since the vax is not required but I went through the issue just this week of NOT vaxing Ethan for it. In our case he had a virus with a fever and a rash that looked too much like Chicken Pox for me to be comfortable giving him the vax (since if you've had cp you shouldn't have the shot). We declined it and everyone (so far) seems ok with it. I would get a note from your ped or your specialist and see if they can exempt you.

This may be unethical to you, but you can just tell the doctor that he had the disease. When my kids had the disease the doctor took my word for it and just wrote the dates down on the shot record.

This may not work everywhere. In this state, the doctor has to have witnessed the rash or you have to have a positive titer.

Philisophical or religious exemptions can happen at any point and be on a moving forward basis. They can also be to certain vaccines. Chicken pox is one of the vaccines that is cultured in aborted fetal tissue, and there is not an ethical alternative to it. I'm sure you could get an exemption based ont hat.

Re: Chicken Pox Vaccine

This makes me worried. I mean I have a while before ds goes to school but I do not plan on getting the CP vax for him. Honestly I don't see the point of it. Can you maybe get an excuse from your pedi being you have family medical history of bad reaction to the vax?? It's something worth a try. I know my pedi probably wouldn't do it.. but you never know with others. GL mama

I was in VA at the time and the doctor didn't want my kids to even come close to the office so other kids wouldn't catch it.

I didn't realize that, I just thought that it was unnecassary and would rather let DS catch it than worry about boosters and such. Which others are cultured on fetal tissue?
