I'd probably flip him onto his belly and do it that way.

I use prefolds on my 19-month-old just fine... and she can roll, sit, stand, walk, run and climb.

I do have to give her a forbidden toy a lot of the time, but lately, she's been laying still w/o me saying anything at all.
