I am starting to worry about my tiny girl Kyrra. She is 15 months now and hasn't gained any weight at all since her first birthday. She was 8.64 kg (19 lb) on her first birthday and is 8.65kg (19 lb 1 0z) now. She's slipped from the 10th to the 5th percentile. I called my public health nurse and she wants to weigh her next week. She also said that the dr. scale and her scale weigh different but she is still so tiny. Everyone says not to worry but it's really hard when you want them to be healthy and strong. Any reassurance or advice would be great.

Re: Worried about weight gain.
I say go with your gut. but i will tell you my dd was 1 inch UNDER the chart for an entire year. At nearly 3 she is 23ish lbs. at birth she was 6 lb 5 oz, and then greaw normalyy until 4-5 months, Then she stopped. shewent2 months where she gainednothing and NO length either. Very FTT in the docs eyes. at 1 year she was 17 lbs, at 18 months she was 20 lbs and at 2 years she was22 lbs.
Every baby grows at differnt rates. my dd isvery healhty. Good luck i am certain she is fine!! but do take her in. there is a very slight chance there is soemthing to be concerned with..

Re: Worried about weight gain.
I have a tiny boy. Riley is 16 months and last month he was 17 1/2 lbs. He's tall and thin, like mom and dad.
He's consistent though, he's always been at the bottom of the growth curve so no one is worried about it. I say, if your daughter has been small forever there's no need to worry, but if she's losing weight all of a sudden, there might be something to look into there. Riley eats like its going out of style so I know he's getting enough, but he's probably just running right off being an active toddler, kwim? Maybe its the same for your daughter! |

Re: Worried about weight gain.
I am pretty sure it's nothing and she has always been on the small side. She doesn't walk yet and in fact has only just started hands and knees crawling instead of army crawling. My other 2 girls are giants compared to her so it just seems odd that's she's so small, I am glad to see that she's not the only tiny one.

Re: Worried about weight gain.
Oh no, my first born is the runt of his litter.
You're not alone in having a small baby.Try not to worry, maybe she's just meant to be petite, or she'll catch up to her sisters in her own time. |

Re: Worried about weight gain.
Dd was about 12.5 lbs at 4 months (or maybe even 13 lbs), and didn't hit 14 lbs until she was a year old. It took her a full year to double her birth weight. She is about to turn 2 in a week and a half, and as of last week she was 19 lbs. From 4 months to 16 months her weight looked like a horizontal line on the chart. Now she is gaining on a curve, but it is below the chart. We did all sorts of testing and nothing significant came up. Developmentally she was a bit delayed when she was around 16 months (all of my dc talk late, and she also had some gross motor delays) but has since caught up. At this point, we are pretty much done with all of our specialist visits, and dd is just growing on her curve.

Re: Worried about weight gain.
I would go with your gut. That being said i don't think 19 lbs at 15 months is tiny. My dd is 14 months(as of a couple of days ago), weighs 21 lbs and is 30" long.
My doctor was worried because she lost a couple of pounds and had a growth spurt. She also told me that she sees that kind of growth pattern in breast fed babies. If your baby is eating well and doesn't show any signs of being sick i would just go with your gut. It could just be that your baby is active(crawling) and just burning a lot of calories.

Re: Worried about weight gain.
I agree with the PP... Go with your gut but my DS is the same weight at almost 19m. It probably just *seems* like something might be wrong because she's smaller than her sisters so I doubt you have anything to worry about. But I say do whatever will put your mind at ease.

Re: Worried about weight gain.
I agree to go with your gut. My neice is 16 months, 31" long and is UNDER 20 lbs...now on her you can actually see her ribs when she raises her arms and she's in 6-9 month clothes. She was FTT but all of a sudden my SIL says she's not and there's nothing wrong with her (but I won't go there on her). I say go with your gut. My DS was tiny too...he was 25 lbs from 18 months until he was 3 years old
He was also only 33" tall for that whole time (recently hit a growth spurt and is 38" but only 33 lbs )All children grow at their own pace
