Help me argue this...

My (pro-bf'ing ) mom made the comment "Well, humans are the only mammals that nurse past a year..." during a recent conversation.

We were talking about another somewhat *hot* discussion I had just had with her DH regarding the gal who was removed from a Delta flight for not covering up. (Whole 'nother story there; stepdad was going on about how she should have just covered up, blah blah blah, and I had to let him know just what I thought about that! Who did he think he was, spouting that off to a group of women, including a nursing mama?!? )

Anyway. I know that her statement's not true, and I found a couple statistics about elephants nursing to 6 years, seals nursing to 2-3...

I need stats and LINKS to prove her wrong and educate her and her silly hubby! Not that it really matters one bit to me, but just because I love a good debate.

I don't know of any stats, but you could always counter with "Yes, and humans are the only animals that have frontal lobes and use reasoning, but that's no reason to stop that either"! LOL

Don't know any stats...

I did take a seminar on extended breastfeeding a couple of years ago and I do remember that if you examine how long other mammals feed and compare it to the development and growth of their young......we should be feeding our offsprings to age 7 to be comparable to the animal kingdom. (it also took in factor such as length of life vs % of nursing and when the adult teeth come in)

I'll look but I have read an article written by a women in the Scientific field and she wrote about how more mammals nursed longer than we do. I'll try to find it and then post it.

Don't know about how long other animals nurse, but I do know that we humans are the only ones who consume the milk of other animals. Ask your mom what she thinks about that
