Has anyone tried the yogurt culture

....that is advertised in a banner on DS? The company is Cultures for Health.

Sounds interesting but wondering how it is.

Re: Has anyone tried the yogurt culture

Yes. I got it a few weeks ago. We like it but we always mix our yogurt with a mashed banana to sweeten it and then add granola or peanut butter to it (we did this when we bought plain yogurt in the store too). It's runnier than store bought yogurt and tangier/more sour but good. It's saving us a lot of money too! The owner of the store is a mama on Diaperswappers too!

Which one did you buy? The one that I was looking at said it was a custard consistency.

Re: Has anyone tried the yogurt culture

we bought 2, the FILMJOLK, which we did not care for plain, too tart, but fine if you added lots of fruit etc to sweeten it.

recently i have been making the VIILI, which we all really like the flavor of.

Neither will have the thickness of a store bought, as most commercial brands will have gelatin in it. I have been using a trick that i learned when making yogurt in a yogorthem, which is to add a tablespoon or 2 of dried milk powder to the mix. also i find if it's really liquidy, i just strain it over a coffee filter to take away the whey.

I find it so so so easy to do, i make 2 cups at a time first thing in the morning. I take 2 tablespoons off my soon to serve with breakfast yogurt, mix it up with the 2 cups of milk (and 2 tablespoons of dry powder), set it aside. Then just before bed i pop it into the fridge, and it ready for breakfast in the morning. I also put it in the cupboard above my fridge, as it's the warmest place at this time of the year.

I say buy it, even it you only make 4 or 6 quart batches, you will be saving $$$

Is this the kind you can make without heating the milk first and can do it on the counter top? If so, I have really wanted to try that!
