Best Spoon for self feeding?
My 14m old DD has shown a LOT of interest in feeding herself with a spoon/fork. She's actually doing it right now with applesauce. But the spoon seems a little big for her little hands (length wise). So is there any "better" spoons/forks out there that are better for this kind of thing?? Mind you half of it is on her bib right now, but she's trying and insists to do it and loves it. So by all means!
Anywho - any mama's with some ideas are appreciated - otherwise she'll stick with this one!

Re: Best Spoon for self feeding?
I always thought they were funny looking, but my son found it easiest to use those spoons where the handle curved back over on itself.

Re: Best Spoon for self feeding?
DD has some big grip ones...not sure what they are. They used to be DSS's and I use them for her. She does great! She also uses her sets my mom got her. They are like real silverware and she got them at Kohl's, JCPenney, or some store like that. I will take pics if I can find my camera attachments!

Re: Best Spoon for self feeding?
I found this cool little camping set at REI. Only the spoon is usable (the fork and knife are really sharp) but it's pure stainless steel and I think the whole set was $3.50. I love that spoon too because it's flat. Much easier to get food off of.

Re: Best Spoon for self feeding?
Our children have all used the chunky handled ones that I think are made by Gerber. And they have all graduated to regular silverware (dessert forks and small spoons) by the age of about 18 months or so.

Re: Best Spoon for self feeding?
I always gave Micah a regular spoon and started out around 10 months or so. It didn't take long before being very proficient at it!

Re: Best Spoon for self feeding?
We use the take and toss ones with the little bowl. They are narrow and light enough for DD to use them easily and the bowl is small enough that not too much is wasted. We use two spoons a meal - one for her to play with and one for me to feed her with. She actually gets about 5-6 real spoonfulls in on her own!
BTW - my Mom's saying for this time of learning to eat is -1/3 in, 1/3 on and 1/3 all over. In our case it is more like 1/4 in DD, 1/4 on DD and 1/2 in the two dogs..... DD likes to feed the dogs from her plate - I think thier whiskers tickle. |
