What about potassium chloride crystals? Has anyone tried those? It's salt free (actually removes sodium) so it doesn't seem like it would damage your machine.

You could use this too:
http://www.dharmatrading.com/html/eng/2204-AA.shtml Seems like that should be a LOT less corrosive than salt pellets. I would heed the warnings before you have a big wet mess on your hands.
