AFO? Anyone's child wear one?

I ask because I just got one. I have one on my right leg and my left will probably need one too. No one in Off Topic seemed to have experience so I figured this is my next best bet

Is there anything I need to know that only experience can tell you? What socks are best here? My foot hurts around the heel from the plastic and how long does it take to get used to this thing?!?!

My dd wears smo's, these are shorter and go to the ankle. and we use hanes socks for her.
we will be ordering her some new ones hopefully this week and she has outgrown the ones she has now, I am getting the run around though with ehr ped for the rx..
the ped needs to give the rx but can't do it until the case manager asks him for one and the lady is not available much so I am waiting, time to find a new ped, I know!

My ds wears smo's also. He wears any kind of socks. Of course he has been wearing them since he was 2(almost 4 yrs now) so I guess they don'tbother him. Is the plastic rubbing your heel? If you are having problems with them you should be able to get some padding put in them. We have had to do that a few times. Each time he gets a new pair it seems like they have to work on a different spot.

Good Luck!!

Re: AFO? Anyone's child wear one?

its got some padding, but I think the REAL problem is that its on my right leg - so when I drive, I have issues. The AFO doesn't let me point my foot basically and I'm not used to moving my whole leg when I drive so I keep trying to press the pedal like normal and thats causing my foot to move around in the brace. Big PITA!!! but...my foot drop isn't a problem anymore and my ankle isn't rolling! stupid nerve damage I'm not looking forward to getting one for leftie - but at least I won't have to worry about driving with that side!
I also have to wear two socks on that foot or my ankles hurt at the hinge...its weird.

Ooohh...I didn't think about that. I can imagine how hard driving with that on can be. I can't imagine trying to drive in the ones my ds wears, much less the taller ones!
Sorry mama . How long do you have to wear it? You might want to check and see if they could put a little more padding right there or give you some little inserts that you could use while you drive. Or, I know this would be a pitb, but could you take it off to drive?

Maybe you will heal really fast and not have to worry about it much longer.

this bad boy is gonna be with me for life - my nerve damage is permanent from my spinal compression so my foot drop isn't gonna fix itself - I'm lucky like that I might end up just taking it off to drive because I'm driving like a teenager right now! lol its all hard stops and fast acceleration because I can't bend!

Re: AFO? Anyone's child wear one?

I have had foot drop for years and I tried an AFO and hated it. I have leaned to walk and even run with foot drop.

My ds had AFOs and it sounds like yours are not fitted right. He could wear his in the summer with no socks under sandles and they would never bother him. So if yours are really hurting them they probably need adjusted. You shore pay enough for the darn things why not have them fit great!! Good Luck Mama

My ds wears them and has for several years. He has to wear long tube sock type socks so no plastic is touching his skin b/c it can irritate him. I was always told AFOs with no socks (or long socks) is a no-no.

We also buy him wide or extra wide New Balance tennis shoes.

ETA: he wore 2 pairs of socks sometimes too for "extra padding" as he calls it.
Here is a pic of him when we went on a trip
