Eye contact???

Ok, so ds who is 4yo has major issues with eye contact when he's being corrected or scolded. He will do anything in his power to not make eye contact with me and it drives me crazy...to me that's the only way to make sure his mind is focused on what I'm saying...any suggestions??

Are *you* able to look people in the eye when they talk to you? I know I can't... I would try having him repeat back what you are saying to him to make sure he "got it" or asking him to look towards you; but eye contact, it is way too much for me and makes me feel uncomfotrtable even when it isn't a negative conversation.

I do have to work at it sometimes, but at I honestly thought that if I can get him in the habbit of looking a person in the eyes it would be easier for him later...we'll try the repeating thing next time!

My six yr old won't look at me when he's in trouble, but will when he's not. So I sit patiently and wait. I tell hem we're not going anywhere until he looks at me. He finally does. I require him to repeat back as well.
