How many prefolds for a newborn?

If I wasn't going to try EC I would get 2 dozen pf and have about one dozen pockets. But I plan to try EC and really don't have a clue what to buy! I'm still planning on about a dozen pockets, but I understand a lot of people (still working my way through the infant hygeine book) put pf under them, in which case i might need the 2 dozen or I might be able to use the larger size I have. Help! I'm probably goign to buy tomorrow b/c that's when GMD is stocking and I need some for my 21 mo DD who I didn't EC.

Re: How many prefolds for a newborn?

I would just get as many diapers as you would get if you weren't ECing especially for newborns because they pee SO often. If you're like me (hahaha) you won't be catching most of them in the sink or the potty but on the diapers. As they get older and know where/when to pee, you'll need fewer and fewer diapers.

IMHO, the purpose of the newborn stage of EC isn't for making sure the baby pees in the potty so much as picking up baby's signals making sure you make the cuing sound when baby pees so he starts associating the sound with peeing.

When I started EC, I stressed out about getting pee in the potty which wasn't good for me or DD. Later, I relaxed and decided to just catch what I could, clean up what I missed, and be happy that my babies hated being wet and dirty and knew that it was wrong to sit around in their waste.

DD is 2 years and 3 months now (started EC at 6 months) and completely independent. She goes whenever she needs to without even telling me first. DS is 8 months old (started EC at birth) and almost out of diapers. I just keep them on him when we're out because I usually can't get to a potty in time (like at Costco, LOL) but he doesn't wear diapers at home, day or night.

Yup, maybe even get a few more than if diapering. I find I go through more pf's with my 3 month old because I am getting a new one every time she wets it instead of every 2-3 times if she was in a diaper.
I think I have 30ish.
