Re: He-ey! A clerk asked me this afternoon...

I've been asked if I was my son's sister (I was 22 when I had him). Plus people give me judgemental stares when I go out like I'm a single young mom (despite the big ole wedding ring). At least you look mature and established.

Re: He-ey! A clerk asked me this afternoon...

I feel ya...

I took a 22 year old friend of mine out for lunch recently and the waiter asked if my baby was hers. What freaked me out most was that he came in with me about 15 minutes before my friend arrived. And he's blond with blue eyes (like me) and my friend is half Mexican...olive-skinned, dark hair and eyes! I mean, c'mon...

And then, to add insult to injury, we went to Target together afterwards and the cashier asked the same thing. Dude. Its not like I have wrinkles and grey hair yet. I was wearing jeans and a hoodie, even.

I chalk it up to the fact that there are so many teenaged mothers these days. Some folks just can't fathom the idea of an adult having a baby.

Re: He-ey! A clerk asked me this afternoon...

I have the opposite problem. I'm 21 and I have a 2 year old. When she was just an infant, my mother and I attended my sister's gymnastics meet. I was wearing her and she was asleep on my shoulder. I was 18 at the time. Another mother approaches my mom and says, "Wow, I didn't know you had another little one!" I turned around and said "Um, no, I'm her mother." And she just sort of smiled an obnoxious smile and walked away. It made me want to cry. I had been changing, feeding, and wearing her the entire time and this woman SAW me doing it, and my mom had never been seen with an infant. DUH, lady. Gah, the nerve of some people. I actually had to deal with this sort of thing a lot, because I have always looked a lot younger than I am.

People do just need to shut their mouths. Never assume something like that, because you may assume wrong.

I get this too. When I bought a pregnancy test (to find out I was pregnant w/ DS) a couple of older women were behind me in line. They kept talking loudly about all the stupid teens getting pregnant. I wanted to cry, could they not see the ring or even not be rude in front of a 2yo!

I'm 39 and have a 2 year old and an almost 10 year old. I know people wonder if they are siblings...although one look at them and you can see they are!

Sadly, because I'm overlly fluffy, no one knew I was pregnant. Even on the day of my c-section the nurse said....i didn't even know you were pregnant...

I am 32 and when I answer the door, people always ask if my mom is home.

I have learned to just say no and shut the door.

Oh and don't let me forget to point out that when I was about 35 weeks along, my ob's nurse told me that I was too young to be having children (again I am 32) I was fuming. The only think I could manage to say was something along the lines of "maybe I should have waited until I was in my forties, so I will have to go on fertility meds."
People sometimes! Grrrrrrrrr

Re: He-ey! A clerk asked me this afternoon...

I'm 39 with an almost 2 year old, and I think I would've died if someone ever asked if I was his grandma. But, as the PP said, I think it's because, unfortunately, there are a lot of 38 year old grandmas around these days.
