Extreme pain w/ weaning... help please!

Hi Mamas... I posted last night in the regular breastfeeding forum, and only realized afterwards that there is a sub forum for weaning. My twins had been only nursing in the mornings for quite some time now (they are 18 months), but over the last several days, they seemed to have dropped their morning nursing as well.
I am having a lot of pain in my breasts, they are very full, hard, and extremely achey. This morning I realized that my right breast seems to have a lump on the right side... eek! What should I do?? I haven't been pumping at all (don't want my body thinking it needs to make more) but the pain is just terrible.
This morning my little guy wanted to cuddle with me when he first woke up, but I almost couldn't because it hurt me so bad.

Any suggestions are appreciated. TIA!

Re: Extreme pain w/ weaning... help please!

hey laura, thought i'd come find your weaning thread. ouchie! if you are getting engorged, please do pump enough off to relieve the pressure. OR you can hand express some in the shower. and take some tylenol if you need to for the pain. as for the lump, its most likely a plugged duct, and you will need to get some of that milk out of there or you may run the risk of mastitis. trust me you don't want that. if you have some of those hot pack that stick on your skin (i can't remember the brand name) pop one in your bra where the lump is. as often as you can rub downward with pressure on the lump. in the shower is a good place to do this too.

congrats again on nursing your twins for 18 months!!

Hey! Thanks for your response. Today is MUCH better. I pumped a teeny tiny bit off of each breast yesterday and it made a world of difference.

Yeah, I am scared to death of getting mastitis - I had it twice when I first started nursing... terrible! Hopefully I never see it again.
