Cutting toddler nails

How do you cut your toddler's fingernails? I used to do it while DD was nursing, but now she's so wiggly that it's very difficult. What do u mamas do?

Re: Cutting toddler nails

I lay her down like she's having a diaper change, then I tell her to hold still and give her something else to play with for her other hand. I never could cut them while she slept or nursed.

I used to cut toes at least while DS was in his highchair. Now I need something very distracting to get the job done so I do it in front of the TV. It goes fast, he sits still, and I don't feel like I am going to hurt him because he is struggling.

Thats a good idea about doing it in front of the TV!
I sing a song about "clip clip clip the nails" b/c my DD likes to sing or I gve her something to hold in the other hand. It is always a struggle for us too though I just try to distract her.

Thanks for the ideas! I don't know why I never thought of singing. I frequently have to make up songs or silly noises when I'm changing her diaper. lol

If he has been especially uncooperative, sometimes I sneak in and do it while he is sleeping.

DD will let me do her nails if we put "prettys", nail polish, on them after.

Re: Cutting toddler nails

I always sang the "ABC" song since the first time I cut his nails when DS was newborn...so by now, its almost like tradition. When time to cut, I start to sing and DS just sits there patient & lets me do all 10. As he is getting older though, he's getting more impatient so I'm not always able to get all 10 done in one song. if that's the case, I'll wait while he's sitting in high chair to finish & do toes.

Re: Cutting toddler nails

I've always just sat my children down and done them. Never had a problem with it. My best friend back in Virginia couldn't believe that they would sit still long enough to have them done without pitching a fit, especially as her daughter, who is the same age as my son, would scream bloody murder anytime she mentioned clipping nails. But her daughter would let me clip them no problem. lol After we found that out I would be the one to clip her nails. I don't know what I did differently than my friend, though.
