Re: doc says there's no way to split the 6 in 1 shot

You most certainly CAN get them split! Not completely, of course - the DTap is basically cemented together at this point. Our doc does Hep B, Rota, HIB, Polio, and DTaP all separate from each other, at our request. These ARE all still made and available separately.
The problem is that vaccines are sold in batches. They can't just order one separate vaccine for one child. And, from what I understand, they are cheaper that way. So, it's most cost-effective for a doc's office to get a big batch of the 6-in-1, rather than buying big batches of each vaccine. (Not to criticize docs in general - they are just doing what's best for their practices, and most of them are of the opinion that vaccines are "100% safe".)
Honestly, I wouldn't go with a 6-in-1, even if you paid me big bucks. There are just too many variables for my comfort. I'm sure you like your doc, and it is difficult to find one that a mom can be comfortable with! (I totally get that!) But, if he's telling you that you have to do the 6-in-1 because the vaccines don't exist separately, well...I would question why he's telling you that.
If you know other moms who see the same doc, it might be worth it to talk to them and see if you can request separate batches for the group, so that it is more worthwhile for the doc to order it that way, because he won't be stuck with leftovers.

Re: doc says there's no way to split the 6 in 1 shot

What we will have to do when we start vaxing Jack is have the doctor order the DTaP and I will pick it up at the pharmacy. Same with the polio and IF wee decide to do the HiB

Re: doc says there's no way to split the 6 in 1 shot

we're in canada so things work different here. we don't get the same shots as you guys in the US.

and my doc said the he used to be able to order the shots directly from the manufacturer in england, but that they won't do it for canada. I already contacted the center for disease contrl and they said that they only order the 6 in one.

you can get them split just sounds like he doesnt want to go through the trouble of doing that.

Now the MMR wont be able to be split any longer. Something to think about.

ETA: just saw your other post. Sorry they wont split them I wouldnt be getting it then.

Re: doc says there's no way to split the 6 in 1 shot

as I said, he was perfectly willing to split them but because of the way things work in canada (and trust me, he actually said that he was quite disappointed with not being able to split them...) we can't get them.

yes, I know the vac's do exist, but let me spell it out for you mamas.

WE CAN NOT GET THE INDIVIDUAL VAC'S IN ***CANADA***

I don't know if it's even possible but could your doctor try calling some peds. in the states to see if any of them could get the shots for him?

Sorry, I didn't even look to see where you were located.

I'm sorry, that's total crap that you can't get them separate.

Re: doc says there's no way to split the 6 in 1 shot

"it's a 6 in 1. (polio, diphtheria, tetanus, HIB, Hep B, pertussis) I really don't like the ingredients. mercury, formaldehyde, aluminum... ick. not to mention it's 6 in 1."

I know there is a separate HIB and Hep B then they make a Dtap which is diphtheria pertussis tetanus. I think the polio is seperate too. I work in a children's hospital in Cincinnati and we give the dtap, Y kiddo got the HIB and Hep B separately. and I honestly think I read that the polio is separate. Try looking up Dr. Sear's vaccine book It is helpful.
I would NEVER do a 6 in one. If you say NO then maybe there will be surprising change in whether they can get it in more separate injections. Good luck. My husband had a thought... are you sure that it isn't a 6 in one visit, not a combo vac? You can spread 6 shots into several visits.
