Re: Do you let your kids wear hand-me-down shoes?

I haven't read all the replies yet but I do not use used shoes for the kids. Dh doesn't see the big deal but usually shoes are worn into a persons foot and can cause problems for someone who is still developing.

the only hand me down shoes we do for any little ones(we have cared for over 10 children in the last6.5years) in our home is the soft leather sole shoes

I do all the time. I'm pretty picky about condition though and they always get a ride in the washer when they get home so if they survive that then everything's great! (and I can throw them in the washer again and again when they get dirty without worrying. )

Absolutely But I don't really believe in being extravagant with clothing and shoes [for me and my children.] I never pay more than $5 for a pair of shoes nor $10 for a new outfit for the kiddos.

I shop thrift stores all the time.

I don't mind clothes.. maybe cause I feel like it is hard to clean shoes.

I agree. Clothes that are in excellent condition yes.. shoes - no..
Only because shoes are worn.. more so than clothes. Dress shoes worn once or twice might be ok.. but everyday shoes, sneakers, boots, etc.. NO.. I rather buy new ones. I mean every one's arch is different and they lop to different sides..etc.. Most shoes people have tried to give to me were worn. I only give away stuff that is like new, mostly new.. kwim? I would not give someone anything that I would not have my kids wear. Just me..

Re: Do you let your kids wear hand-me-down shoes?

ABSOLUTELY

we buy almost everything from thrift stores. we are fortunate though to have a nice, clean, goodwill in our town which is a nice town. the prices are much lower that the goodwill stores inside of the city, and everything I buy looks like new. I do have to buy new scrubs for work because I usually can't find any that fit right, and my husband does buy new pants for work. All of his shoes/shirts come from goodwill. I bring home some SANI-Wipes from work and clean shoes with them.

I figure that once my kid wears something once, it's worn anyway.

Re: Do you let your kids wear hand-me-down shoes?

As a person with foot problems all my life, I've freakish about their feet, so I don't let them use hand-me-down shoes. It has more to do with the shoe shaping to their individual feet for me. I did let my ds2 use his older brothers shoes for a bit, but it just kept bugging me, so I don't anymore. DH thinks I'm nuts, but now that ds1 is wearing out his shoes from playing so hard (he's 8), it's not an issue anymore. By the time ds2 is at that size, the shoes are toast anyway so he needs new ones!

Re: Do you let your kids wear hand-me-down shoes?

if theyre in good condition i will let him wear used anything. i actually got him a pair of stride rites in GREAT condition for $1.50 from the thrift store the other day! he wears a size 5 right now and theyre a 5.5 so theyre his "next" shoes.

i dont like used shoes for myself unless theyre in really good condition, but babies/newly walking toddlers shoes dont get worn out as quick as adult shoes do IMO so its a lot easier to find them. his shoes right now are used too, new balances i got off of ebay. they look almost new!

DS went from not walking at all at 12 months to being a VERY good walker (almost runner LOL) now at 13 months, so i dont think that his used shoes have effected his development
