would you let your kindergartener ride the bus to school?

ds starts K in the fall and we live in a small town so i'm kinda considering letting him ride the bus to school (he says he wants to) but other times it kinda freaks me out because he's just so young

I am in the same pickle! My hubby is even more worried. I hate the idea of him being on a big bus with out me!
I have yet to come to peace with it.

I might on a trial basis. The first time he was picked on or anything, it be all car riding from there.

I absolutely would. If you think he's too little to ride the bus, maybe it's better to keep him home for another year? Kindergarten is going to pose all the same issues that the bus will!

My vote is for no. If you can get him to school another way, via carpool, walking together, etc... I would. Just because there's 1 bus driver and 60 students on a bus. No telling what could happen, and you certainly don't want the bus driver taking their eyes off the road to see what's going on in the back of the bus. Plus, what about car seats? In Kindergarten they are only 5 right? They should still be in car seats, most school buses don't even have seat belts! This is just my opinion though.

Re: would you let your kindergardener ride the bus to school?

My DD is in kindergarten this year and I was SO nervous about her riding the bus! Thankfully, our school district had a GREAT kindergarten orientation for parents and kids. We were able to meet and chat with the bus drivers and get to know the bus procedures, etc. It really put me more at ease. My DD has great bus drivers (different ladies for AM/PM). We have to have an adult there to make sure she gets on and off the bus safely and the drivers keep us informed of any issues, etc. as needed. Its gone much better than I EVER expected it to.

ETA - Our busses have a maximum of 30 kids on them at a time. There are maybe 15 on the bus that she rides TO school and maybe 30 on the way home (they ride with kids up to 4th grade in the PM)

My dd is 1st grade this year and she rode the bus to school in Kindergarten. She loves the bus! I was nervous, too, but the bus driver is great!

No, but it has nothing to do with age. My son will never be allowed to ride the school bus, because I think they're terribly unsafe.

Re: would you let your kindergardener ride the bus to school?

My kids do. IMO, they're safer than me driving them to school, and there are fewer cars on the road that way.

My kids are on the bus in the morning for 45 minutes, because they're the 2nd stop. Seems like a long time, and I remember thinking "what if they need to use the bathroom?" But everything has gone just fine. I'd be more concerned if there were much older kids riding the bus, but for us, it's just K-5.
