Re: would you let your kindergardener ride the bus to school?

To the PP who mentioned buses not having seat belts, much less car seats, buses are designed to utilize compartmentalization in an accident, and it has shown to be very effective.

To OP, I say let him ride now, however, I have no personal experience as DS is only 8 months old and I won't even let him stay with a babysitter, much less go any where, lol!

Re: would you let your kindergardener ride the bus to school?

Not if I could help it. When the time comes I will drive him if I can.

I am a teacher and I have worked in many different districts serving all different socio-economic groups and the one common factor to them all was that a majority of behavior/discipline issues take place on the bus. Why? Large numbers of unattended children. Never have I been anywhere that they could actually afford to hire a bus monitor for each bus. The driver should have his/her eyes on the road- not on the children. And even if he/she is trying to watch, there is no WAY he/she will catch everything. ANd kids know that.

It is not that I worry about my Kindergartner getting in trouble, but that he will be a part of that whole "scene" and either learn bad habits/disrespect from the older kids- or he will be hurt/bullied there. It may not happen, he could be fine, but if I had a choice, I'd drive him. Classrooms are WAY more supervised than buses. Even playgrounds and cafeterias have 2-3 times more supervision than the buses.

Re: would you let your kindergardener ride the bus to school?

My ds is kindergartner this year and he rides the bus. I never really thought twice about it. Yes, I was a little nervous, but isn't everyone nervous when the lo heads off to 'big' school? Our school district has a program where they have bus safety and an orientation ride before school starts. Then they require the smaller kids to sit in the front rows of the bus and will not release the child from the bus unless a parent or guardian is waiting at the stop. He hasn't complained about riding the bus at all, frankly I think he enjoys it

And for what it's worth we live in the suburbs of a large urban area.

Edited to add--our buses have seat belts.

Re: would you let your kindergardener ride the bus to school?

wow, y'all have brought up a lot of great points! i'm really hoping the school has a kindergarten orientation because i think i need to see how things work before i can make my decision. the town is pretty small (less than 500ppl ) and there are only two schools k-5 and 6-12 and they all ride the same buses. i hadn't really thought at all about him being exposed to big kids and trouble makers we're definitely going to have to look into it more and discuss it before we make our decision...

Re: would you let your kindergardener ride the bus to school?

My son rides the bus, but, he's with my 4th grade daughter. They go to the same school that goes from K-4th grade. We have to pay for them to ride the bus. We started because I had to be on bedrest during my pregnancy.

We don't feel comfortable with ANY of our kids riding the bus. The good thing is, we live less then 5 mins from school so we take them in the AM and pick up in the PM.

Re: would you let your kindergardener ride the bus to school?

Yes! I was definitely nervous about it in the beginning, not knowing what to expect. I cried the first day of school when the bus pulled away, and then I hopped in my car and drove over to the school to watch her get off the bus and get safely in the building!!! This was on my mom's recommendation – apparently she did the same thing for all of us.

That said, my daughter LOVES the bus. I think it might be her favorite part of the school day LOL. She actually cries if we oversleep and I have to drive her to school. She has about a 25 minute ride on the bus in the morning. It's not a very full bus and they do have seatbelts they must wear.

Also, her bus is only K-1st grade so there are only kids age 5-6-7 on there. I really like that!

Re: would you let your kindergardener ride the bus to school?

Nope... I take and pickup and if I can't I have carpool help lined up or family I call. Mostly it's due to me being able to see that he went straight to class and did walk off somewhere else with another child or something to that effect. Also because I am anal about driving and just don't have a huge comfort zone with bus drivers. My family I have pick up I'm ok with and the 2 carpool mom's I know drive safe.
Also, I've been on every field trip my son has been on the last 2 years and that bus is so beyond nuts I can't imagine him on it every day.

But this is just me.. like I said.. I'm pretty anal and overly safe.
