Sugar cookie recipe

Seems like such a simple request yet I cannot make these darn cookies to save my behind! And DD would really like to bake this year with me so i want to make these and have them turn out well. Does anyone have a foolproof (mindi proof) recipe?

Do you want a recipe for the real big fat ones with a layer of frosting an inch thick? If so, I got'cha covered...

Okay, this was my late Gramma's recipe. We LOVE them!

1 cup plus 2 Tablespoons shortening

2 cups sugar

2 eggs

1 teaspoon baking soda dissolved in 1 cup milk

2 teaspoons baking powder

1 teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon vanilla

4 cups flour, to start

Cream vanilla, shortening, sugar and eggs in mixing bowl. Mix flour, salt, and baking power in seperate bowl. Alternate flour mixture and milk-soda mixture to form soft dough. Then, add up to 2 cups more flour to right consistency. Dough should be soft and not sticky. Roll dough on a flat, floured surface. Make cut outs. Bake @ 400F for about 7 minutes. Don't overbake or they will get hard. They should be slightly browned on the bottom, still white on the top. We always use homemade butter cream frosting for these. Sometimes we sprinkle coconut on top of the frosting. YUMMY!!

Here is the best sugar cookie recipe I've found. Credit goes to my SIL's grandma. We've renamed them "so good cookies" lol. The cream cheese frosting makes them to die for.


2 cups sugar
1 cup margarine
2 eggs
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp lemon juice
½ cup sour cream
1 tsp salt
1 tsp vanilla
4 cups flour
Preheat oven to 375. Cream
margarine and sugar; add eggs,
lemon juice, sour cream and vanilla.
Sift dry ingredients and add to
mixture. Flour should be added 1
cup at a time. Chill at least 2 hours.
Roll out on well-floured surface and
cut out with cookie cutters about 1/4" thinck.
Bake 7 minutes, or until just turning brown.
Frosting
¼ cup butter
4 oz cream cheese
1 lb powdered sugar
¾ cup flour
1 ½ tsp vanilla
1-3 Tbsp milk
Mix together ingredients, adding
milk a little at a time until
spreadable consistency.
