Encouraging labor? (acupuncture etc)
Anybody using holistic/eastern med methods to encourage labor readiness? With my first, we went in to get acupuncture when she was a week overdue. They scolded me for trying to force things at the last minute instead of coming in for my whole pregnancy... (yeah, ok, if I had the cash I'd be all for weekly treatments, but you do what you can right?) Anyway, I went in 3 times over the next week and baby came naturally 14 days overdue. I have NO idea if the treatments helped or not.
Now that I'm 36 weeks, I'm really hoping this one doesn't take so long to bake. It's not that I'm impatient (OK, yes I am), but my OB won't let me go that long without going against medical advice. Her limit is 1 week overdue before induction. So, I'm thinking, should I go in for acupuncture/pressure or should I just spend the money on a nice relaxing massage?? Or is there some other effective method that you know of? For those interested, my acupuncture involved needles in the hands and feet, some of them hooked up to an electrical current that was turned up as far as I could tolerate. It wasn't, um, comfortable or relaxing, but I was desperate! I'd love to hear your tales.. |

Re: Encouraging labor? (acupuncture etc)
I'm just drinking red raspberry leaf tea, and taking Borage & Evening Primrose Oil to try and help my body get ready for labor. Hopefully I won't have to do more than that.
With DS1 I went into labor 8 days "early", and I'm hoping that this time I will at least not need to have the induction conversation (meaning I have no idea if this LO will be early or not).

Re: Encouraging labor? (acupuncture etc)
I know that some people don't like it, but I tried castor oil with my daughter. I don't know that I would recommend it, but i would probably try it before an induction. I asked my midwife about it and she said that I could do it if I wanted. I was already overdue when I did it and ended up having my baby 8 days overdue. It took a couple of days, but I do think it helped get things going. I would probably try other things first! Acupuncture doesn't really sound fun either though!

Re: Encouraging labor? (acupuncture etc)
the chiropractor is supposed to help your labour be quicker. i started going 2x/week at 36 weeks and all i know is between that and red raspberry capsules, my labour was only 3 hours long compared to 36 the first time around.
i need to get some evening primrose oil capsules and i'm going to call my chiropractor and start setting up some adjustments. there's supposed to be some good in reflexology and pressure points and stuff too. my friend is a massage therapist with reflexology training so i'll have to talk to her about that too.

Re: Encouraging labor? (acupuncture etc)
hehe.. I haven't been in the mood for MONTHS!!! I give in every other day or so.. and he is still whining that he isn't getting enough! I don't understand how he is soooooo into it when I'm sooooo huge. I think this big belly gives him some kind of ego trip that makes his hormones rage. Sadly, every postition about kills me.. and we are down to only two working at all and I secretly spend the time wishing it was over

Re: Encouraging labor? (acupuncture etc)
With my second I drank the castor oil milkshake. It wasn't horrible but it made for a fantastic and speedy delivery. I tried it at 38 weeks since I was horribly constipated (sorry tmi) but start to finish my labor was only 10 hours with no tearing and no epidural. I loved it. I'm not sure I'll do it early again since I'd like this one born on the due date but if its not here then I definitely drink it again on my due date since it's my late mom's birthday. I also was doing nipple stimulation for a couple weeks leading up to the "milkshake". When I drank the shake I was only 1cm dilated and it sent me straight into labor. I went into labor on my own 3 days late with my first.

Re: Encouraging labor? (acupuncture etc)
Borage oil is derived from the seeds of the borage (Borago officinalis) plant, a large plant with blue, star-shaped flowers found throughout Europe and North Africa and naturalized to North America.
At least that's what google has to say about it. It's supposed to be similar in composition to EPO, but more potent.
