my son coughs all night

he doesnt during the day but all night he coughs so hard. anyone know why? anyone elses do this ?

Has be been sick? Does he always do this or just recently?
If its not from being sick could it be dry air? Maybe try a humidifier? or could it be an allergy to something in his room?

What about asthma or acid reflux. Have you tried to prop him up a little bit.

Acid Reflux, Asthma, or Allergies. My son has all three. *sigh* Go to the doctor and start narrowing it down. We dealt with it for 2 whole years! Ended up with the adenoids and tonsils coming out and now he's on reflux meds.

Check what you're using on your laundry! For some reason when I use dryer sheets with my linens I get a horrible itchy throat and cough as soon as I lay down in bed. I also used to get a stuffy nose in bed but thankfully an allergen blocker matress pad helped with that.

If it's happening only at night and while he's laying down (not at night while he's walking around for example) and it doesn't 'carry over' to the next day I'd first assume there's some kind of irritant where he sleeps.

Bronchitis? i have acute bronchitis and when it strikes i cough all day but i cough worse all night long.Sometimes depending on how bad i get it i dont cough untill nighttime.

I go to the doctors could be allergies.

My DD coughs at night and the ped said it could be asthma. You can have asthma that only presents at night, like after a full day of play and bad air or allergy season. She takes Singular when she's sick or the weather is bad before bed and she doesn't cough anymore.

I'd bet asthma. DS#1 (5 yr old) was diagnosed last fall, coughing at night was his only symptom. Our pedi said that in kids, coughing after midnight (in an otherwise healthy kid) is almost always asthma. We started him on inhalers and he's much better. Poor kid wasn't getting any sleep before!

thanks guys. its kinda recent that he does this, but it isnt every single night. some nights are quiet all night and some its just cough cough cough all night long. its so hard that he sounds like he is going to puke. i will ask the doc when we go. thanks for the replys
