Re: Pacis for EBF babies - to use or not to use?

My first was a nipple confused baby- he didn't get to feed after birth because of other issues & then while they were taking care of him, they gave him a paci- against my will & knowing. he didn't take a paci for long, maybe 4mo but could never get the bf down.

DS2 was fed immediately after birth & wanted to do only that all the time! I finally had to find a paci or I would have started bleeding- no milk & sucking 24:7! He uses a NUK either button or ring & it has been wonderful! He hadn't had any nipple confusion or anything & is going on 7mo! I am so glad tohave that paci! He would eat & eat & eat if I didn't have that- or rather suck & suck!

I didn't want to give it to him because of my prior experience, but I do think that it really depends on the baby!

Re: Pacis for EBF babies - to use or not to use?

My first DD never took a paci (she also refused to EVER take a bottle )

I had no intentions of using them with my second DD, either. Then we experienced some major over-supply issues. My baby was miserable. She wanted to suck because her belly was sore and she needed comfort-- but she couldn't use my breasts as a pacifier because they would drown her in milk (thus exacerbating the initial problem.)

When she was about 3 weeks old I discussed it with my LC. She gave us the go ahead. We ended up using the newborn sized Avents and also the Mam Nanos. They both worked very well for her and neither caused any sort of nipple confusion. They are pretty much the exact same shape, it's just the outer casing that's different. She prefers the Mams (I'm guessing because they are more "form-fitting" and lighter) but they are interchangeable at this point. (Thank god.)

I don't regret our decision to offer her a paci. It was an absolute life-saver... I am a little worried about weaning her from it now, though. *sigh* Oh well. At least my baby is happy. LoL.

My DD used the soothie brand pacifier for the first few weeks. We had no issues because of it and later on she started refusing them anyway (she likes the real thing better, lol)

DD loved it and was never confused, weaned from paci at 18 mons. DS took for about 6 mons, no confusion, but won't take it anymore, even though I wish he would sometimes. DD would take any shape, DS Mam shaped more than orthodontic.

DD1- Had severe nipple confusion but we worked through it. After we established BF, we introduced the paci. The nurses gave it to her in the first place even though I said not to.

DD2- Offered after BF was established but she had no interest.

We have offered a pacifier, but we weren't very diligent about it, so DS mostly sucks on his hand or a toy. He's always had trouble keeping the pacis in his mouth.
