Just got a food deyhrator!

My fam got me a food dehyrator for my b-day. I'm so excited!! So far I've dried: pineapples, mangoes, apricots and watermelon (on my aunt's suggestion). I'm going to do strawberries next. I love that I can dry fruit without the sugar-coatings, like a lot of the store-packaged stuff.

What do you dehyrate? I'm looking for ideas for snacks but also recipes for how to use things like dried veggies.

Re: Just got a food deyhrator!

It's a Nesco/American Harvest. I have the 13" model (which is the smaller model) - comes with 5 trays and is expandable up to 7 trays. It doesn't look like it will hold much but you can PACK the fruit onto the trays. I was so eager to use it for the first time that I just used canned fruit from the cupboard instead of going to the market for fresh. In one drying session, I dried: 3 large cans of sliced pineapple, 3 large cans of sliced mango, and 2 large cans of apricot halves.... and there was still room for more things on there, if I'd really squished everything together more.

The instructions also say you can make jerky with it. We're not red meat eaters, but I might try some turkey or salmon jerky at some point. And, I'm definitely going to be drying herbs to use in the winter.

Hi!
We dehydrate our granola weekly. We also add some raw nuts, sunflower
seeds, coconut to the granola. Much more healthy to cook it this way.

Re: Just got a food deyhrator!

Weird question...would it be possible to dehydrate baby food? We are wanting to go hiking with lo, but the food is so heavy!! I'm thinking this might be a good idea, then just add water....hmmmmm...
