Frozen cheese?

So I don't even know if you're supposed to freeze cheese but it was such an awesome deal that I got it. It was five pounds of shredded mozzarella and I broke it up into one pound bags. How long do you think it would be good frozen? Thanks!

Re: Frozen cheese?

Freezing cheese is perfectly fine! My mom used to by big blocks of mozzarella and cheddar at the local dairy and shred it herself and freeze w/o a problem! You can even freeze sliced american cheese and it tastes just fine. 3-6 months for freezing is recommended.

Re: Frozen cheese?

I do it all the time and it's generally in the freezer for a few months.

Re: Frozen cheese?

We froze the cheese at the pizza place I used to work at, and used it straight from frozen...it was good for 6 months, officially, but we used each bag up before it was even a month old!

Re: Frozen cheese?

Ok, thanks so much mamas. I feel much better about it now - it's been about 3.5 months.

Re: Frozen cheese?

if you double freezer bag it and suck all the air out it keeps very well for longer.

Re: Frozen cheese?

Another one to freeze the cheese all the time. Block, Shredded (sometimes sticks together - just smack on the counter and take out what you need) and sliced. The sliced and the frozen may get more crumbly, but use it to cook with.
