Anybody know how to make their own Aquadoodle mat?

I really like the idea of Aquadoodles--it is both reusable and easy to clean up. I keep thinking there has got to be a way to make my own coloring mat. Any ideas?

How about painting on the sidewalk with water and inexpensive brushes?

I hope someone else has a better idea, I'm curious too.

That's a good idea when the weather is good, thanks. Winter time activities would still require an indoor solution. I'm wondering whether I could sew "the right" fabric (something thin) to vinyl. The top layer would have to dry quickly. It would also have to change colors when it got wet, possibly showing the color of the vinyl. Ideas mamas?

what about an all plain cotton mat and fabric crayons? they wash out of cotton. so if you made 2 or 3 mats to rotate through the wash... i avtually have a couple packs of crayola fabric crayons here. if you decide to try it, lmk. i'd send you a pack FFS.

Another good idea. Unfortunately DD doesn't always stay on the paper (she 18 mo). That's why I'd really like to use a small quantity of water to color.

Re: Anybody know how to make their own Aquadoodle mat?

When I was in college we made tracing mats. The very basic idea is to put some tempera paint into a freezer bag, squeeze all the air out and then seal/tape the bag. Then put it on a surface of a different color. IIRC we taped them to posterboard. The child can trace designs with his/her finger and it shows up as the color underneath. You have to play around with the amount of paint in the bag. You want a very very light coat, but enough that it will coat the entire bag.

I know it isn't the same, but it could be a fun substitute. It's also really great for fine motor skills.

I was just looking at one the other day at a friends house and I wonder if you used a dark colored waterproof fabric with white cotton over it. When they "paint" the cotton with water, it should become transparent showing the dark color of the underside...what do you think?

I remember seeing somewhere this basic idea: fill a ziplock bag with a small amount of paint, then once it is closed you can draw designs in the paint from the outside with your fingers. It is kind of a finger painting activity without any mess or finished permanent project.
