That is not a bad name. I would not change it!

Doesn't Gross mean Big in German? I wouldn't change my name unless it was really hard to pronounce or something, and then I wouldn't even do that. your DH family might be highly upset if you changed surnames.

We had a guy in my brother's high school class with that name. Until you mentioned it in this post, it never ocurred to me that he might have been teased. And I never heard my brother mention any jokes about his friend, either, and never heard any around school myself. And they just made contact again recently (20 year hs reunion).

Re: Bad name question--opinions/thoughts?

Remember the show Michael J Fox was in where he played Alex Keaton? I can't remember the name for some reason. I think the father in the show was an actor named Michael Gross. I know his sister was Mary Gross of Saturday Night Live. I never thought anything of the name. Of course I wasn't a kid in school.

I am a teacher. As much as we try to teach our kids to be resilient. And as much as we try to teach kids the importance of kindness, kids will meet up with many different types of people. Someare unkind, or just unthinking.

How did your husband feel about growing up with that name? Was it annoying even just having people comment on it all the time- even if they weren't being unkind?

Re: Bad name question--opinions/thoughts?

Just my two cents... my family recently found out that our name was changed a few generations back. I am supposed to be an Anderson, and my maiden name isn't even close to that. They changed it because Anderson is just so common. We had been trying to do some ancestry stuff when it was uncovered. I think a name helps a person understand more about their heritage and ancestry, and when they get older they may really appreciate that, you know? I think it's kind of weird that I had a name I wasn't really supposed to, if that makes sense.

Re: Bad name question--opinions/thoughts?

I noticed this thread because I acquired a strange, though not unpleasant, name thru marriage.
It's interesting that your husband was the 1st to suggest changing it. It sounds like he doesn't love the name and probably doesn't want to pass it on to his kids.
I guessed the name right away, but assumed you were changing it to Goss.

I definitely would consider the name change. Not because your kids *might* get teased, but because you want a name that you are proud of and have positive feeling about.

Leave it. I knew a little girl named Wendy Butts, Holly Wood, and a boy named Cole Hogg... They were never made fun of that I know of. It is the child and their attitude toward life that makes the difference.

I think kids will find a reason to tease if they want to, whatever name you have.
