My DS is 5 months old, and currently battling his 3rd UTI!

His first was at 7 days old, was admitted to the childrens hospital at 12 days when the UTI was confirmed by a urine sample via catheter. (first one was just a bag, not sterile) He was (and I was with him) in the hospital for 6 days on IV antibiotics, followed by 3 days of IM antibiotics in the office, and low dose oral antibiotics until his VCUG. He had to have a spinal tap to rule out infection in his spinal fluid

. Never had a fever, fussiness or anything. We only suspected something after seeing blood in his urine. (E-coli bacteria...100,000 per millilitre of urine)

At 2 months he had a VCUG (http://www.radiologyinfo.org/en/info.cfm?pg=voidcysto) to rule out kidney reflux, and it came back normal. He also had a kidney ultrasound and has mild fluid in both kidneys. We were told to stop the oral antibiotic at this time.

2nd UTI was at 3 months old. Symptoms were low fever (100.5) and extreme fussiness, abnormal for him. Sample showed E-coli bacteria again, 40,000 bacteria per millilitre. (not actually considered a UTI, but in a small infant with a history of them, they treated it as one). 2 days of IM antibiotics and 10 days of oral.

3rd UTI, 5 months old. Symptoms were strong smelling urine and yellow discharge from penis along with extreme fussiness. Culture showed Citrobacter Freundii bacteria, 80,000 bacteria per millilitre. We're now on day 8 of 10 for oral antibiotics.

Now he's being referred to Pediatric Urology for further testing, so see WHY the poor thing is going through these! He is NOT circumcised, and all the doctors seem to believe that is NOT why he's getting these.

Does anyone have any experience with recurrent UTI's in young children? What were some tests your childs doctor performed, and what was the treatment? How long did the UTI's last (when did they "grow out" of them?)

Thanks everyone, i'm just so worried about my poor little guy. I know how uncomfortable UTI's are...and to have 3 in your short 5 months life!

Any advice, experience or support is greatly appreciated!

no experience yet with them- but I can't imagine how difficult it would be to watch your lo go through this so many times! I hope you have a good urologist who can get to the bottom of this and find out what's going on.

My oldest dd had them. But, she had reflux into her kidneys. She went through several VCUGs, renal sonograms and MRIs. She was cath'ed every Monday to check her urine, that is how bad hers got. She took an antibiotic every day of her life from 3 weeks until just after 2 years. They finally did surgery on her right after her second birthday to correct the problem, since it was scarring her kidneys. I know this isn't going to help in your situation, since it wasn't reflux, but you are not alone! I know how miserable it is. I hope they can figure out why he is getting these soon! hugs to you and your ds!!

Thanks guys, it's just really stressful! I don't WANT them to find something wrong with him, but it would be nice to have an answer as to WHY this keeps happening, KWIM? Especially since i keep him SUPER clean down there after his first UTI!

2 of my sons have reflux. Oldest DS had surgery because his right kidney stopped growing. DS 3 is on low dose antibiotics--which I HATE! Hugs mama, we feel you.

how are you cleaning? you aren't retracting the foreskin by chance, are you? that can be a cause of UTI's in intact boys.

bubble baths could be another possible culprit...and congenital urinary tract defects....I found this link which seems informative:

Isn't it strange that UTI's are so much more common in girls, yet we don't suggest cutting off any of their genitalia as a solution? Girls are also far more likely to develop breast cancer, than men would develop penile cancer, yet circ is commonly suggested as a preventative measure for avoiding penile cancer. Why not cut off the breasts?

Anyhoo...sorry to ramble. I hope it stops happening to him. Be firm with docs, and esp. urologists, circ is NOT the answer.

My daughter was born with deformed kidneys, or what they call duplex kidneys. She didn't have reflux, but she had an extra ureter that was draining much too slowly, resulting in a nasty UTI. Fortunately for us, we knew about the duplex kidneys before she was even born, so we were referred to a specialist early on. She had surgery at 15 months old to remove the duplex part of the kidney, as well as the extra ureter. I have no doubt that this was the smartest thing we did, if not the hardest thing to go through! Surgery on a baby is no fun at all.
