Any good resources about sensory integration disorder?

I would love any good resources you can recommend. I THINK I am headed in the right direction with this. I really want to research it as much as I can.
Also, if your child has this how did you go about getting it diagnosed and I have read about a sensory diet...what exactly is that? What kind of treatments have your LO's had?

The Out-Of-Sync Child and The Out-Of-Sync CHild Has Fun are HUGE. They are written by one of the major experts and The Out-Of-Sync Child is basically the Bible of sensory disorders, but easy to read.

Re: Any good resources about sensory integration disorder?

The books mentioned above are good suggestions. DS hasn't been specifically diagnosed with SID, but does have MANY sensory issues b/c of his PDD.

A sensory diet is basically a schedule of daily activities. The thought is that you need to give the child the sensory input he/she needs in constructive ways. That way they don't seek out the sensory input in destructive ways. For example, one sensory issue my DS has is that he LOVES deep pressure and seeks out physical stimuli. He constantly crashes into things, jumps off of high objects, etc. All seeking input without regard to his own personal safety. His OTs developed a sensory diet that includes things like heavy work (carrying loaded laundry baskets, grocery bags, etc.), jumping into bean bags, crawling through a tight fabric tunnel (same stretchy fabric used as cuffs of sweatshirts) while pushing a medicine ball, jumping on trampolines, etc. We do one of these activities every few hours. We also do lotion massage and we recently added brushing. We can see a big difference when my son receives the input through his diet vs. when we are lax and don't do it like we are supposed to.

As for treating it, we have the daily sensory diet and DS goes to OT twice a week (to help him learn how to self-calm so when he goes into sensory overload he'll know what he needs to do to bring himself back down.)

I too have "Raising a Sensory Smart Child"...It is an excellent book. My daughter goes to PT 3 times a week. She does the swing (kind of like a stretchy hammock), plays in beans, etc. She is doing better for sure.
