Re: An ethical question about breastfeeding

I think it is perfectly fine! I would do it. And the processing kills the good stuff in it. IT IS A LOT OF WORK!

I am suprised at how receptive most people are to the idea. I am glad. I think it is a good thing too, just something to be careful with.

I am glad that people are receptive to it also. I think it is important to not just take it from anyone though.

100% agree

Re: An ethical question about breastfeeding

I am 90% ok with this. She does have expenses a pump etc... the other mother is saving money.

However I wish that more women would look at donating. The milk bank in my state, bills $3 per ounce. However a baby in the hospitial the accept what the insurance is willing to pay be it $3 or nothing.

They prioritize who gets the milk

First is babies that are premmies or other wise sick.
Then those that are intolarant to formula.
Then the healthy babies in this order:
Mom wants to BF and either can't or has to supplment
Adoptive mom
Mom that doesn't want to bf for whatever reason.

Well I am at the top of the healthy baby list and I can't get donated milk, Not that I could afford it. However I would really love it if my baby could have banked milk instead of formula for her supplment we are at 10 ounces a day. (At our worst point she was at 22 a day. Course that was when Thrush was making it hard to just maintain let alone build supply...) So that would be $30 a day for her supplment. There is no way I could pay that.

I would love if someone I knew and trusted would be willing to sell me milk for $1 an ounce but only if I knew there was enough milk in the bank to provide for the babies in greater need then my DD. If there wasn't I would prefer they donate the milk. If that makes sense.

Re: An ethical question about breastfeeding

Seems fine to me. It is her milk. She can do what she wants with it!

Re: An ethical question about breastfeeding

I wish I could donate mine. There does not seem to be anywhere near me that will take it I have a huuuge supply (again, bring on the triplets ) and just one baby to eat it. (Though he *is* 18 pounds at 4 months )

When my best friend gets pregnant I've told her I will help her out if she needs it. Absolutely.

What I don't 100% understand is people saying they would only donate breastmilk if the mother couldn't bf for whatever reason. I can completely understand wanting sick/formula intolerant babies to get bm first. After that though I am fine with my milk going to any healthy baby, regardless of mother's feeling towards breastfeeding herself.

The way I look at it is this. Yes, in a perfect world all mothers would could breastfeed would. I wish we were there. However denying someone pumped milk isn't going to make them bf themselves. For me it's about the babies, not the mothers (not that I'm not trying to help the whole family out, but first and foremost it's about helping a baby get the best IMO).

Re: An ethical question about breastfeeding

i think it is great that she sells it, if more people would be open to it we probably wouldn't need milk banks (which have to pasturize and kill much of its good properties anyway!!) bc people could just find someone who would sell it or donate it to them direct!! if i knew someone who needed it i would give it!!

Re: An ethical question about breastfeeding

I've heard that the milk banks pasteurize the bm (which of course would kill all the good stuff in it)!!! Anyone know if this is true???

I would donate if I could. I have never been able to pump though...I'm too prone to thrush I would definitely be a wetnurse, though!

Oops...I just read the above post LOL I guess they do pasteurize it. Sad!
