Velamentous Cord Insertion (VCI)... Have you heard of it??

VCI is where the cord attaches somewhere else, other than to the placenta. I was curious, since it is supposed to be very rare, how many DS mamas have heard of it or had it themselves. I had it w/#3.... her cord was attached to the amniotic sac instead of the placenta. It caused a retained placenta, which I was told would not happen again because the VCI is so rare & that would not happen again either... got me wondering if it really is as rare as I have heard & read ??

ETA: If you've had it or know someone who has, did you (or they) have it for more than one pregnancy?? Also, did it cause any issues during pregnancy, labor, delivery, or after the delivery like it did for me w/a retained placenta??

Re: Velamentous Cord Insertion (VCI)... Have you heard of it??

I had it!! I had never heard of it before, and it was not diagnosed until I passed my placenta. We had no complications with pregnancy or delivery, and supposedly (I was told by my dr), it was the reason for dd being born so small (4lbs 11oz). I did a ton of research afterwards and also did find that it is very rare (less than 1% of pregnancies) and that it is not likely to be diagnosed prior to delivery, or to happen in more than one pregnancy. It was really scary to read about all the complications of a VCI, and so thankful that everything went ok with ours!

Oh, and my dr commented that my placenta was really small- likely due to the VCI, and that's what led to my dd's tiny size/weight. She's my only lo, so I don't know how big placentas usually are!

DH and I will be TTC #2 in a few months, will be interesting to see what happens... hopefully we'll luck out and follow the statistics, with no problems!!

I KWYM!! I cried my eyes out when I read what **could** have happened. I found a low intervention birth is the best thing for a VCI because the more interventions there are, the more chance for a rupture, the cord being snagged (as in an amniotomy or c-section), etc.

I am very glad to hear you didn't have any complications, & hope the same for your anticipated pregnancy .

And as far as a baby being small because of it.. well, my DD #3 was 10lbs, 4oz so I can't speak for that !!

Thank you to the other mamas for your input too... I am curious to see how many others have experience or any knowledge of this... I was clueless until it happened to me ...

I just went through this with my last pregnancy with dd2. Not a fun experience at all.

Re: Velamentous Cord Insertion (VCI)... Have you heard of it??

I work in L&D so I know what it is, but have never seen it myself. The midwife who delivered my second child (homebirth) told me that she had one case of that, along with a case of a true knot in the cord. Both are very rare, and the highest chance for complications is due to medical interventions.
My midwife said that there was no poor outcome as a result (this was a homebirth that was very hands off)

Occurrence is like a fraction of a percentage of pregnancies. I definitely would not worry about it happening a second time.

I voted other. I have heard of it, I know what it is bc I am an L&D nurse. I have never had one, or a family member that has had one. I did have a patient recently that had one...
