Do you give dc multivitamin or iron supplement drops??

dd is 8 mo and doc suggested multivitamin and iron supplements at our last visit. this ped is very open minded: he's totally cool with delay/no vax and is a big bf supporter, says 4 yrs with a MINIMUM of 2.

something about iron needed for brain development at this stage. i am taking prenatal vits still but have to be honest that I haven't been eating that healthy. she is eating solids but not that much, her main nutrition is coming from bf.

any thoughts on this? can't think of too many cons but if there are any let me know. really interested if everyone does this or not..

Thanks!

Re: Do you give dc multivitamin or iron supplement drops??

I just recently started my 1yo on PolyViSol w/ iron b/c his iron levels were low at his 1yr appt. WIC requires the blood test so we had to... Anyway, I wouldn't give them to my baby unless it was really needed, not just because. Typically, an EBF baby (or BF w/ some solids) doesn't need suppliments if they're growing well. It was kinda old-school to think the BM didn't have everything your baby needed. BUT if mom is lacking in iron her BM may not be providing it for baby. If your dc is showing signs of anemia (pale, bruises easily, circles under eyes) than its a good idea to test, pref. just a finger poke. I wanted to avoid straight iron supps. so we did the multi-vitamin w/ iron like my older kids' chewables.

At that age, no... my dc's iron levels were great plus he didn't have enough teeth to chew a multivitamin (kids chewables would have been a choking hazard for him).

I give a chewable multivitamin as well with my older 2. Especially because some days it seems like they eat nothing. With Eden I used drops(poly-vi-sol) because she was late in getting teeth I put them in her water cup because I read that liquid vits can stain teeth. That may be your best bet with your little one being so young. Have you had a cbc done to see if your baby is anemic? Too much iron isn't a good thing either.
Mine are/were all EBF and so far with my older two the pediatricians haven't recommended vitamins until around a year-18 months, the only thing they have recommended before a year was flouride.

My oldest gets a multivitamin but Ethan doesn't get anything other than bm and some solids. I don't see the need for an iron supplement for him unless he is tested and shown to be low.

Re: Do you give dc multivitamin or iron supplement drops??

We started giving DD multivitamin tablets (Flintstone etc.) at around 2-2.5 yrs. Right now DS is 17mo. and hasn't gotten any drops but I was thinking about it since he's much more of a picky eater than DD ever was/is..
