the knife on a serger can be folded down (at least on my elna 654 it can) and then it only serges and doesn't cut; it's good to use in tricky areas or going back over an area.

i made a woven cotton ruffle shirt for DD using only serger...the edges were roll-hemmed and it turned out great.

I always wanted a Babylock..it's my holy grail of sergers, BUT if the knife doesn't fold down, then I don't know anymore...

I find that so weird.

check the left side of the arm as that's where my button is to depress the lever and it makes it turn to lower into the housing below...
