San Antonio Mamas, I need a pediatrician. HELP

So we just moved back to San Antonio after 2 years of being away. I still need to find a pediatrician for my kids. My kids aren't vaccinated so the doctor has to be in accord with that. I'm just wondering if anyone has any recommendations for a ped in the area.

Re: San Antonio Mamas, I need a pediatrician. HELP

Hello-here are the drs. who were recommended to me as drs. who are ok with delayed or non-vaxing:
Dr. Diane Mcmains
Dr. Bruce Lantry
and Dr. Michael Ozer (I think)

These came highly recommeding by the midwives at my birth center. Couldn't use any of them though b/c they don't accept my plan. I'm thinking of getting a new one--I really want to get in with mcmains. The one I'm seeing now is just tolerant but he doesn't agree with me.

HTH!

FYI: Dr. Diane Mcmains

I've heard that she has very long wait times. She's supposed to be great, but some moms don't like her office staff. I've heard that if you are late 3x, you get dropped from the practice, but she runs late all the time. A lot of ppl complain about having to wait so long. She does have privileges at all the local hospitals.

We are trying out North Hills Family Medicine. I'll let you know how it goes. Are you military? North Hills takes Tricare and waves whatever Tricare doesn't cover.

ETA: On some boards they talk about Dr. Jennifer ____, who EBFed, coslept, babywore, and was fine w/ nonvax. However, she just changed practices and her new group doesn't see kids unless they are on the CDC vax schedule.

Re: San Antonio Mamas, I need a pediatrician. HELP

that is a bummer about dr jennifer. we prob would be going to her if she was still at her old practice. have you joined the local AIP group? they have lots of info about area health care providers.

we went to North Hills today, and it was pretty good. i went a few months ago b/c i had a sinus infection and a migraine w/ a visual aura - that had never happened to me before. it was a friday and DH was working the next day, so i wanted to see someone b/c i didn't know what was going on. i saw dr. geralde, and he worked me in. i only waited about an hour (on a friday afternoon)! he was thurough, and i didn't feel rushed and recommended using salt water before i tried antibiotics. i feel like i would trust his diagnosis if DD was ever sick enough to worry me.

so today i took in DD. the nurse was personable and made DD pretty comfortable. the nurse and dr. g told me what they were doing before they did it. i held dd and undressed her. the nurse asked me if we were "up to date on vaxes." i told him that we don't vax. he said, "ok." then he brought in a form for me to sign. it said, "I, ____, parent of _____, have been informed of the benefits and risks of vaccinating and am declining vaccinations at this time." i had no problem signing that. it's much better than the AAP form. dr g didn't even bring up vax w/ me. he didn't say anything about EBF past 6 months of age or cosleeping.

i know that some ppl like dr earp better than dr g. they think dr earp is better w/ kids.

I take my ds to Dr. Benjamin Smith at NW Pediatrics. I'm vaxing, but am going at a much slower pace than what the state recommends. He's been really good about letting me delay the vaxes. My ds has a lot of food sensitivities, so if he's having a reaction I can't risk giving him a vax and compounding the issue. I don't know if he's ok with not vaxing, but I like the him and the practice.

My kids go to Kassia Kubena - she's over on Prue Rd. near Fredericksburg.

IDK about her views on non/delay vax since we full vax our's but she's always been very open minded about my CDing, BW, ERF, etc. so I can imagine she'd hear you out.

I just wanted to hop on here and say that because of this thread we tried North Hills Family Medicine - WOW! What a refreshing approach to health care! They have a holistic approach and the bedside manner of both Dr G and Dr Earp is absolutely fantastic. Their two nurses, Mary and Danielle, are also amazing. In fact, when we brought Lily in for our first appt there (her 2yr well-child check up), Mary started off by saying, "Have you ever considered a delayed or selective vaccination schedule?" You could have knocked me over with a feather. When I showed her the schedule that we have Lily on, she said it looked great and added it to her chart - no questions asked!

A couple of days later Lily came down with Rotavirus and we had a walk-in sick appt with Dr Earp. He was absolutely fantastic, so kind and caring and was VERY thorough with us.

Thank you so much for recommending this practice - we love it!!

I see Dr. Earp myself and I think he's fabulous. I do not like my pediatrician so I may be trying one of those listed here. I delivered at St. Luke's with the midwives so I had a little bit of a hard time finding peds. that do rounds at Luke's and are close to me.
