My little guy is sick.... ongoing bowel problems and weight loss?

Just seeing if anyone had experience with this.... Caleb is almost 3 (next month) and has been having some bowel problems-- the last 3-4 weeks alternating between huge pure lquid blowouts and exlosive poop that resemble wet play sand. Before this he'd been totally potty trained, but now he can barely get there in time-- during the day and at night.

At the doctors today he'd dropped from 42 lbs (he's 40 inches... so he's tall) this past spring to just a smidge under 35 lbs. Obviously a huge red flag.

He's already milk and soy free, and we've just started wheat on aregualr basis (and already removed it), he does no peanuts....

We sent samples in today to rule out rotovirus and similar things.... next will be testing for celiac (gluten issues do run on both sides of the family).

I feel awful.

Oh hon, I am so sorry that you are going through this. Does the wheat coinicide with the bowel issues? I'm betting on that if so. Its kind of an overwhelming thought, but the good news is that if it *is* celiac, then symptoms completely resolve when you remove gluten. There is some great gluten free stuff out there now. Also, I want to tell you, as frightening as it is, the blood test isn't totally accurate for celiacs and if this is a real possibility, then he should probably be scoped. He will also need to stay on wheat to have accurate scope results.

HUGS, mama. I will keep you guys in my thoughts and prayers.

Make sure they tested him for Giardia; it's a fairly common parasite kids can pick up from puddle-splashing. I hope it turns out to be something easily solved.

Re: My little guy is sick.... ongoing bowel problems and weight loss?

I'm just twiddling my thumbs here waiting for the doctor to call.

We've started doing a diary of all that he eats.... he has been a great eatter from the beginning. He was my preemie, born at 34 weeks (iffy on that too, by my books he as 33 w 5 d)-- only lost a little and has been steady. Great appetite, healthyfoods. Yesterday he ate a banana, 3/4 of an apple..... two pieces of Shredded Wheat (mini bites), few cups of water, then a glass of calcium fortified OJ. I tried anything.... he was excited about the birthday cake for my hubby, all afternoon talked about eatting cake. He played with it and fed it to his sister (whoops).

He ate a banana this morning, some applesauce and he did drink a 6 oz cup of rice milk.

I'm going to try to make a smoothie-- he asked for carrot juice (does that exist???) a bit ago so who knows.....
