Pain in the ... muscle?

Okay.. I am offically 34 weeks along--measuring right on track (although I'm 5"2 and look enormous) and lately while I'm sleeping I've been having pains around my right hip. I know they are from that one muscle that attaches right there (I think it begins with an "S"... I promise, I paid attention in birthing class!!). It's the muscle that attaches to baby there and to the tailbone to support all the extra weight.

Does anyone know what I'm talking about? I always THOUGHT I used enough pillows... although I can always get more and oust DH out of bed! I think the pain only comes when I've settled for a while on one side or another. Does anyone know anything I can do to help the pain? Rubbing the spot doesn't really help. I guess my body is just gettin' a-ready for the big day! I haven't had anything that I could recognize as false labor or contractions (although this is my first).... could that be the pain or do you think it's the muscle? Any advice would be great!

Thanks mamas!

Re: Pain in the ... muscle?

Oh, I remember the aches and pains. And they really started getting bad around 32 weeks for me. I had a hard time sleeping at all. I definitely got bigger pillows and DH was ousted long before that. Probably as much for his comfort as for mine though.

Sorry I can't help much here. I went into labor at 34.5 weeks. So I didn't have to battle with it too too long (although it seemed like forever). I did end up sleeping propped way up in an almost sitting position toward the end to take the pressure off my sides. I even slept in our lazy boy recliner a few nights to get some sleep. I think it helped. But I still just had to shift position frequently at night or the aching would come back. Good luck!

Re: Pain in the ... muscle?

OY! Do I remember that pain! I hated being pregnant- and I don't think I slept more than 2 straight hours from week 30 on. I did use one of those long body pillows and it helped a little. Otherwise, I just tossed and turned, and tossed and flipped and heaved and rolled, etc. all night long. When the bad heartburn kicked in I slept some in a recliner- under the fan!

I had Braxton Hicks contractions starting around 5 months pretty regularly. They were not that uncomfortable and usually happened during my walks. Actually, I liked them- weird, eh? You will definitely know the REAL thing when it happens!! LOL!!

Your Sciatic nerve is the one probably giving you pain...and it is a real pain!!! I had it with Mia this last time and am not ever looking forward to it again!!! try and keep the pressure off your legs. It kinda helps.

Re: Pain in the ... muscle?

I REALLY recommend an egg-crate mattress topper. It can make a huge difference with that kind of pain, by distributing pressure better. (Dh didn't want to sleep on it, so I got a twin one and put in it a comforter cover, and then just put it over my side of the mattress.) They often have good deals on them at overstocks.com, and often free shipping, too. BB&B also carries them. Totally worth the $.

I used those huge body pillows with my first pregnancy, too. If you feel like you're inundated with pillows 'cause you're using so many you may have come to the point of no return. It may just be something you'll have to suffer through until the end - I know it got tough but you'll forget about it a little while after you give birth! I hope you can find something to help make it feel better, but I don't have much advice - I think I just toughed it out.

Yep... so far it's just toughin' it out... I think I'm taking all the measures I can! We have one of those squishy "spa" bed toppers ( kind of expensive... but cheaper than a new mattress!) that I think does a better job that Ye Old EggCrates (I grew up with them....did you know that cherrios fit nicely in the cups and make for a fun crunchy bed?)

Thanks for the advice though---no one seems to talk about a funky Sciatic nerve! At least I know what it is--that's half the problem! It's nice not to be alone in the pain

Re: Pain in the ... muscle?

i started having problems with that at 3.5 months with my second, to the point that i couldn't even walk at night. it was horrible. this time around it's not AS bad, it kills me at night but i can still somewhat walk at night at 27 weeks lol. i've found as long as i get enough sleep it's not as bad and sometimes non-exsistent (pain wise) in the a.m. but the trick is actually getting that sleep when your hips are killing you. good luck mama!
a good ice massage gives some relief. buy some plastic cups and freeze water in them then have your hubby get the huge ice block outta the cup, wrap a cloth around it for his hands sake and just rub it in circles on your lower back. also get a slim maternity belt and wrap it TIGHT around the lower part of your hips for short periods at a time, this helps SOME.

What great ideas!! Ice! Why didn't I think of that! But my pain really is right on where the Sciatic nerve is (I will never forget that word as long as I live)... so at least I don't have pain in my back..... just along my hip! Maybe the maternity belt my help too!! Thanks so much!
