Question Can I freeze lunch meat?

The only linch meat my husband eats is on sale and I have a coupon for it. So I was wondering if I could freeze deli sliced lunch meat. Not the pre packaged stuff.

Re: Can I freeze lunch meat?

Being a vegan now, I certainly don't do this myself.... but back when I was a kid and ate meat, my mom did this a lot. She would freeze stuff if we were eating it too slowly to keep it from going bad. She would freeze stuff if she caught it on sale and wanted to stock up. She was a big freezer of meat (deli meat included). As far as being ok, it never gave us a problem. As far as quality/taste/texture go, because all the moisture freezes into little ice crystals which can pick away at the food, the texture of the meat will change. (you know how lettuce pushed to the back of the fridge freezes and kind of turns into a mush? it's the ice crystals tearing up the lettuce membranes.) I never cared for the texture personally. Taste was about the same I think, but texture was less than desirable to me.

Try it and see what you think. HTH!

I freeze ham and bologna, haven't tried fresh deli meats but really don't see why not.

We do this with ham, turkey, and roast beef all of the time. I think you can freeze it as long as you use it within about 6 months.

Re: Can I freeze lunch meat?

I freeze lunchmeat when it is on sale or we are not using it fast enough. My Mom used to freeze it when we were kids the only one she had problems with it the one with the cheese in it (we don't buy that one since no one here eats it).

Yes! I do this all the time. The only brand my teens will eat is on sale this week for 2.99 a pound and I have coupons for !.00 so at 1.99 a pound I'm stocking up again since we are down to 2 packages in the freezer.

Re: Can I freeze lunch meat?

Yes, but it gets slimy if you don't eat it right away once it's thawed. I suggest putting several pieces (or whatever you need for a day or two) between layers of wax paper (which you can reuse) so that you don't have to thaw whole packages at a time. I say two day supply max for defrosting, otherwise (especially ham) is super gross.
