Itchy, or Just "Discovering"?

6 mo. old DD has been doing something weird the past few days. She's not really scratching, but more just repeatedly grasping and releasing certain parts of her body, most often her diaper area (though I've also seen her do it on her forearms as she's being rocked down for a nap). She does it over her diaper when one is on, and in between changes, her hand has been going immediately there.

We've kept a good eye on the areas, but no rashes or visible irritation. DH is convinced that she's itchy and something is wrong, but I'm wondering if she's just "discovering." Is 6 mo. or so about the time that this starts to happen?

The only thing I can think of is that we recently switched to regular Tide powder for diapers as well as all of our clothes, but I've been rinsing dipes well and using a very minimal amount on her loads of clothes. She also did it the other day when I had her in sposies all day to do a good vinegar rinse on all of her dipes and inserts. I figured if it were a detergent irritation, there'd be a rash or something anyway...but maybe I'm wrong?

My DD went through a grab stage at diaper changes, but I can't remember how old she was (she's almost 2 now). I do remember having to really be fast or she'd grab down there and get her hands icky. Maybe other mamas w/ LO's your DD's age can help more.

ds is almost 1 and still squishes himself down there. he also went through a phase where he would pinch or scratch himself, he still likes to pinch and scratch mama while nursing i think it's just a discovery thing.

My DD (8 months) did the exact same thing a few months ago! I just thought it was 'discovering' as you put it. When diaper area wasn't available she'd rub her finger tips over her arm. A few weeks later she scratched every different fabric she could find. It's probably just about textures, learning hand/eye coordination, feeling touch on different areas of the body. My brother/SIL said their DS (8 months old now too, I know, cute, cousins the same age!) did the same thing around the same age, every time they took his diaper off he'd pull on his penis and twirl it around his fingers. Just something new to play with!

I agree, just figure out what's down there. DD2 still grabs when she can. I have to be fast or distract her with something else.
If I leave her diaper off for a bit for naked time, she'll be like, hmm, what's that? Then she'll forget about it as soon as she thought about it.

Just healthy, normal self discovery. That area is covered most of the time, so babies don't get to explore it like they do toes, elbows, mouth, etc. It will come and go in phases.

I am glad to read this, because my DD (21 mo) does this on occasion. She will even try to reach down into her diaper at times. Dirty diapers have definitely turned into dirty hands! Yuck! Hard not to worry!
