How Often to do You Pump at Work?

I was trying to figure out how many bottles i would need and it made me wonder how often should you pump at work? What do you think?

You should pump for each feeding you miss. Basically, every 3 hours. I only work part-time, so I only pumped once/day (about 9:30ish, after having fed baby about 6:30am). If you work full time, then prob. 9:30ish, lunchtime (if you can go to daycare & feed baby directly, that'd be great!!) and 3ish.

Re: How Often to do You Pump at Work?

I am away from my LO for 11 hours four days a week. At work I pump every 3 hours: 9am, noon, and 3pm. I nurse him just before I leave and as soon as I pick him up. Bottles...oh my...I don't even want to go there. We have probably 15 bottles. I send 6 to the sitter and bring six to fill each day. It never seems like there are any that are clean! It also depends on whether you store in bottles or bags. I store any extra milk in bags and what goes to the sitter in bottles. HTH! Feel free to PM me.

Hey--I'm in KY too!!

Re: How Often to do You Pump at Work?

i store in medela bottles until the day he uses them so i only bring those to work...

he drinks from born free glass - we have 6 and he takes 2 a day so i could go 3 days but with pump parts i have to run the dishwasher every 2 days anyway...

i go through a lot of medela bottles and horn/pump parts...4 bottles a day - i pump 4-5 times at work...he takes two large bottles in my absence...

Re: How Often to do You Pump at Work?

When working a full day:

8:30am nurse before leaving daycare at drop-off
11am pump at work
1pm nurse at daycare over my lunch break
3:30pm pump at work
5:30pm nurse before leaving daycare at pick-up

Re: How Often to do You Pump at Work?

I nurse at 5am, pump at 6am, 9am, nurse at 11am, pump at noon, pump at 3pm, nurse at 5pm, pump at 6pm, nurse at 8pm, pump at 10pm nurse at 1am (and then you are back to the beginning)

I think it really depends on how much you are working, how much you are able to pump, how much extra you wanted stored up. If you know you are going back to work full time I HIGHLY suggest you get started pumping right away. Within the first few day...start pumping a few times a day to stimulate production...then gradually add in more pumping sessions.

Good luck!

Re: How Often to do You Pump at Work?

Thanks everyone, it seems like alot to learn but, i guess you just figure out what fits into your baby's needs. I'm currently working 8-10 hour days on the other side of the city so, I guess the pump will be getting a work out.

Re: How Often to do You Pump at Work?

I work 24 hour shifts and pump both sides every 2.5-3 hours during the day. I don't pump overnight (because hopefully we are sleeping) and then I pump one side in the morning before I head home. I leave the other side full because he nurses first thing when I get home in the morning. When I'm with him he's a one sided nurser but I pump both sides at once when I am gone. It's just easier that way. The mornings that I leave for work I nurse him at 5:30am, pump both sides at 6am before leaving home, and then go from there once arriving at work.
