Question about vinegar soak for ammonia smell

Do I soak the diapers when they are dirty or should I wash them first, do the soak, then wash them again?

And should I soak the outer part of the pockets also? DS woke up early yesterday morning complaining that his penis hurt and it was from the ammonia in his night diaper. Should I soak the pocket part to get rid of ammonia in it too? Or will doing the inserts take care of the problem?

Thanks!

The inserts should take care of the problem. For us, that's where the ammonia and stinkies always are. I've also heard that vinegar can wear down PUL and elastic, so you want to be careful with soaking the pocket part.

Re: Question about vinegar soak for ammonia smell

search for the "vinegar oxyclean" thread, I just tried it the other day and it worked well. I only soaked the inserts, not the pockets, as I don't want to risk damaging them, and the mf inserts are the ones that are the culprits,( at least in my case) I did a full diaper load, hung out the pockets to dry, then soaked the inserts in vinegar (outside) and then added oxyclean (for a chemical reaction) and water.

I do a pre-soak(my washer has the option) and I only put my pf's in there(not covers) and put about 1/3 cup of vinegar and it works great.

Re: Question about vinegar soak for ammonia smell

I soak my diapers and covers in water. when i put them in the washer, i run a quick spin to get the water out, then run a rinse cycle, then wash with allen's naturally soap, then i run another rinse cycle. It is a lot of rinsing, but since doing that, the smell is gone.
