Frustrated

Ok, so I'm getting ready to go back to work soon and I'm trying to start building my stash up. Well pumping on my right side works really well, but I can't for the life of me get much or anything out of my left side. I'll sit and sit for about 20 minutes before I just give up. I'm lucky if I can even cover the bottom of the bottle if I pump on my left side. What gives??? Pumping my right side I don't have any problems with and DD can sit and eat off of the left just fine too. I hate pumping

Re: Frustrated

first, pumping can be stressful, but i've noticed that stress decreases my output! so take a few deep breaths and know that you're doing your best. i've never had this problem, but here's a few ideas:

- put a hot compress on that side at least 10 mins prior to pumping.
- are your boobs/nipples a different size? maybe you need a smaller or bigger horn for that side. if you're using a Medela pump, the horns can be customized to fit
- try pumping on that side while your LO feeds from the other and see what your output is then
- try breast compressions on that side. Kellymom.com has lots of great info on that.
- gravity is good - try leaning over when you pump.

i can't think of anything else at the moment, but i hoped something there helps you!

I think i'm going to try pumping on that side when DD decides to eat from the right, because I always feel my left letdown and leak, just AGH!! Can't I just stay home

Re: Frustrated

Yeah, Sara kellymom.com is one of the best things I have found so far. I would agree with Lisa--breast compressions and heat should help some. Have you tried pumping while she is nursing from the other side? I know you mentioned it, I just wondered if you had tried it before and if it worked? Keep posting and keep trying. You'll get it. I know lots of other women who have trouble with pumps as well. (Weird, I have a great relationship with mine...hehe...but I'm more intimate with it than I am even with DH these days...OMG...I can't believe I said that out loud!)

GL! PM me if you need more help! I'm doing it a minimum of 3 times a day...surely I can help somehow. Do you know when you're going back yet?

Re: Frustrated

I know first hand stress can really have a negative effect on pumping. I was at work one day and got bad news and went to pump and could not let down! It was awful! You've gotten some great advice. Hang in there!!

Re: Frustrated

you're not really starting that late. I didn't really work on a stash at all. I just pumped once a day and froze for 2 weeks or so.

You may have already planned on this, but I didn't think of it until someone told me (Silly mama!), so I'll mention it to you. When you do go back to work, send thawed milk from the stash on Mondays, then freeze Friday's milk. That will keep your stash rotated and fresh! Every other day, send the previous day's fresh milk. Simple, I know, but I didn't think of it without someone telling me. Then I was shocked I hadn't thought of it. I think I was going to freeze and send the oldest each day, but the fresh milk is actually better for them than the frozen!

Re: Frustrated

I just reread your OP. Do you feel the left side let down?
