Question Fever with flu/cold

How long can a fever that comes with the flu or a cold last? When should we worry?

Re: Fever with flu/cold

With flu, the fever can last up to a week, but more in the range of 4-7. Usually with a cold, the fever is only the first couple of days and isn't nearly as high. Flu fevers can easily reach 104+, colds tend to stay under 101.5.

As far as when to worry...If his fever continues to be high past day 4, he should be checked to make sure that it isn't another infection besides flu. Also, if the fever goes away and then comes back in a couple of days with green snot or a bad cough it could signal a secondary infection. Of course, if you are worried...just take him in to be checked anyway.

Just keep him hydrated and I would worry if it keeps going up instead of down. Also, you can tell how your DS is feeling. My DS can play when his temp is low grade, but when it starts getting past 101 degrees, he is so sleepy and week.

A few years back, two of our kids (when we only had two ) had fevers for a whole 7 days...no fun!

Re: Fever with flu/cold

Last year my ds had a fever of 104 for two days and after the fever went away he broke out in a rash (which is completely normal, it's the body's last action of getting the yuckies out of the system). In order to help in a natural way I gave him some Aconitum, Belladonna, and Chamomilla. These are all available at your local health food store and they will all work together with his body to get past his illness. If he's still not doing too hot, or if he ever get's sick again, give these a try.
