Does medicaid cover tubal ligation?

So we're trying to figure how to prevent any more babies for a long long time. . .like probably forever.
I know medicaid doesn't cover regular birth control, I can't take hormones and other methods haven't worked for us. . coverage only lasts 8 weeks so I don't think it'll cover an IUD or at least I don't want an IUD that soon after birth due to complications that can occur. . .however I do remember reading that medicaid covers sterilization, which I guess would include tubal ligation. . .

So do any of you mamas have any information/knowledge about this? Trying to get in touch with medicaid and get answers for anything always takes forever.

It does. I had mine 2 years ago while on Medicaid. No expense on our part. But they do ask you repeatedly if you are sure. They don't want to be accused of pushing sterilization on the poor.

Medicaid covers ALL birth control, including tubal ligation/vasectomy.

This was my understanding as well.... and as for how long PP it lasts that will depend on the state for which it is administered - in OK for example it lasts for 6 months PP but in PA it is only 12 weeks.... which of course as you mentioned limits options.

I am not sure how you feel about planned parenthood for getting BC - but most pills can be obtained through them for $15 or $20 a pack depending on type - VERY cheap.

Good luck..... we're done for a long time here too!

Well, here and in CA, they will cover any birth control any time if you were eligable while pregnant. I guess their thinking is that it is much less expensive than paying for another pregnancy/child etc.

Here they pay for it or a vasectomy but only if you are over the age of 26.

Here in IL, Medicaid will pay for tubal if you are over 21yo. They also pay for ALL forms of birth control, pills, IUD, implanon, etc. Regardless of insurance or lack thereof, you can get the generic of TriCyclen or Ortho Tricyclen for $9 a month at Wal-Mart

Re: Does medicaid cover tubal ligation?

I'd try to get through with your office since it varies even by county what they'll allow. I had medicaid for 3 months after having LO and they were going to pay for a full year of birth control. I also know that you have to be a certain age or if you're under the age have a certain number of children before you can legally have the operation (in my county). My FSIL had medicaid and she got the IUD and loves it though.

Re: Does medicaid cover tubal ligation?

It does, but you may have to sign a consent a certain number of days prior. I think in Colorado it is 30 days if you deliver at term and are wanting a tubal immediately post partum. Check with your OB. They will definitely know the Medicaid rules for tubals, and will be easier to get an answer out of...
